Sourcing diamond wire saws from China

Diamond cutting wire classified under the relevant other-saw-blade lines pays 2% UK duty from China; the supplied heading spans 0% to 2%. Confirm the construction and code first. UK suppliers must supply safe, compliant products with correct documentation. Cambridge China Bridge sources diamond wire saws.

Duty depends on the confirmed wire classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8202 covers handsaws and saw blades, including toothless blades. This guide concerns replacement diamond cutting wire, rather than complete powered wire-saw machines. The supplied facts do not expressly name diamond wire, so treat the table as candidate classifications. Repeated codes show different cutting applications, not separate tariff lines.

The supplied other-saw-blade lines carry 2% duty from China: 8202 99 20 00 for working metal and 8202 99 80 00 for working other materials. Neither lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty, a suspension, a steel measure or an attached import control. The wider heading ranges from 0% to 2%; see the drill bits and saw blades guide.

Send your customs broker the wire construction, photographs and intended cutting material before confirming the commodity code. Do not assume every diamond-coated wire belongs in this heading. The worked order is illustrative and assumes the stated classification; the import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.

Specify the wire for the material and machine

State the material being cut, including reinforcement where relevant, and the machine model, pulley arrangement and intended wet or dry operation. Agree wire diameter, supplied length, core construction, joint method and operating instructions. Distinguish beaded wire from continuously diamond-coated wire in the enquiry and drawings.

For beaded wire, specify bead diameter, spacing, diamond bond and the rubber, plastic or spring arrangement between beads. For coated wire, specify the coating and diamond distribution. Agree sample cutting trials on the intended material, recording cut quality, wear and any bead movement or coating loss.

UK suppliers must supply safe, compliant products with correct documentation. Request instructions covering installation, joining, operating limits and retirement criteria, and agree how the factory will identify each production batch.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: replacement diamond saw wire coils for a stone-cutting business, assuming classification under this code under 8202 99 80 00, invoiced at £4,500 free on board, with £450 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,950. Duty at 2% is £99. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,049, so it is £1,009.80. Import taxes total £1,108.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £99 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure wire and bead diameters, length and bead spacing against the agreed drawing; check reel labels against the contents.

Core and joints: inspect for broken strands, kinks, corrosion and uneven joints; test core, joint and bead retention against the agreed acceptance criteria.

Cutting performance: run a controlled trial on the intended material using a compatible guarded machine; compare cut finish, wear and wire behaviour with the approved sample.

Instructions and packing: check operating information, batch identity and reel protection; look for crushing, tangled coils and moisture damage during inspection.

What goes wrong

A bond selected for the wrong material can leave the wire polishing rather than cutting, or wearing rapidly. Loose beads, damaged cores and poorly made joints can cause premature failure. A trial on an easy substitute material can hide poor performance on the buyer's actual stone or reinforced concrete.

Check arrivals before releasing them for use. Set aside coils with kinks, loose beads or damaged joints and compare the affected batch with the approved sample. Keep the core, bond and assembly specification fixed between repeat orders, with changes agreed before production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on diamond wire saws from China?

The supplied other-saw-blade lines carry 2% duty from China, with no listed trade remedy. Confirm that your cutting wire belongs in those lines; the wider heading ranges from 0% to 2%.

Does this guide cover complete powered wire-saw machines?

It covers replacement diamond cutting wire. Ask your broker to classify a complete powered machine separately rather than applying the wire's candidate code.

What should I specify when ordering diamond saw wire?

The cutting material, machine compatibility, wire diameter and length, core, joint method and operating conditions. For beaded wire, add bead dimensions, spacing, bond and assembly.

How do I check diamond wire quality before shipment?

Measure against the drawing, inspect the core and joints, test bead retention where applicable, and run a controlled cutting trial on the intended material against the approved sample.
