Sourcing carbide metal cold-saw blades from China

Carbide-tipped metal cold-saw blades from China carry 2% UK duty across the applications covered here, with no listed anti-dumping duty. Confirm applicable supplier safety and safe-use information requirements with HSE, and request adequate safe-use information for tools supplied for use at work. Duty and classification for carbide-tipped blades

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8202 covers handsaws and saw blades. Carbide-tipped circular metal cold-saw blades fall within 8202 39 00 00, covering circular saw blades other than those with a steel working part, including parts. The table shows application variants sharing this code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied record gives this line a 2% duty for goods from China. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel measure or attached import control. The cutting material matters: a steel body does not make a carbide-tipped blade a blade with a steel working part.

Confirm the working-part material and circular blade construction using the commodity code guide. For other tools and blades, see the wider drill bits and saw blades guide.

Specify the teeth, workpiece and machine fit

State the metal grade, workpiece hardness, solid or hollow section, wall thickness and cutting operation. Specify blade diameter, bore, plate thickness, kerf, tooth count, tooth geometry and carbide grade. Supply the arbor and drive-hole drawing, machine model, rotation direction and intended operating conditions. Agree whether cutting uses coolant and how the blade may be reground.

Approve a cutting trial on representative stock using the intended machine and clamping arrangement. Record cut squareness, burrs, surface finish, chip evacuation and tooth condition against agreed acceptance criteria. Request batch records for body heat treatment, tooth grinding and brazing.

Confirm applicable supplier safety and safe-use information requirements with HSE for tools supplied for use at work. Ask for mounting, operating and damage-assessment instructions. Employers are legally required to provide safe equipment for use in their work.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed batch of replacement carbide-tipped metal cold-saw blades for a fabrication business under 8202 39 00 00, invoiced at £35,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £37,000. Duty at 2% is £740. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £37,740, so it is £7,548. Import taxes total £8,288; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £740 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Machine fit: measure diameter, bore, drive holes, plate thickness and kerf against the approved drawing; check flatness and runout on a suitable arbor.

Teeth and joints: check tooth count, grinding geometry, chipped tips and braze joints; compare material records and sample hardness with the specification, and agree a braze-strength test.

Cutting performance: trial representative stock under agreed conditions; compare squareness, burrs, finish, vibration and tooth damage with the approved sample.

Arrival condition: check for corrosion, bent plates and impact damage; verify maximum operating speed, dimensions, identification and instructions, and ensure packaging separates the teeth. Agree the sampling through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A blade can fit the arbor yet cut poorly because the tooth geometry suits solid bar rather than thin-wall tube, or the carbide grade does not suit the metal. Wrong drive-hole positions, unsuitable kerf and excessive runout cause mounting problems, vibration and wandering cuts. Trial the blade with the actual workpiece and machine before approving production.

Weak brazing can release teeth; brittle tips chip and poorly ground teeth leave burrs or rough cuts. Transport damage can bend the plate or chip adjacent teeth. Compare shipment samples with the approved blade and hold damaged arrivals for assessment before use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on carbide-tipped metal cold-saw blades from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 8202 39 00 00 a 2% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Does a steel blade body mean the steel-working-part code applies?

The cutting material matters. The reference guide places carbide-tipped circular saw blades under 8202 39 00 00. Confirm the actual construction before declaring the code.

Can I use the same blade for solid steel and thin-wall tube?

Specify each application separately. Agree tooth count, geometry and carbide grade for the material and section, then trial representative stock on the intended machine.

What should I check when cold-saw blades arrive?

Check bore and drive-hole fit, flatness, runout, tooth damage, braze joints, speed markings and instructions. Compare a cutting trial with the approved sample before releasing the batch.
