UK duty on decorative metallic braids

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 5808 covers braids in the piece and other ornamental trimmings without embroidery, other than knitted or crocheted, including tassels and pompons. Decorative metallic braids in the piece use 5808 10 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that tariff line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied lines carry 4% duty for goods from China. They show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, no suspension and no attached import control. The other line, 5808 90 00 00, covers other goods within the heading. Metallic colour alone does not describe the construction, so obtain the yarn specification and a physical sample.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual construction before shipping. Woven ribbons, lace and embroidered trims have different headings. See the wider braids and decorative trimmings guide when buying a mixed range.

Specify the metallic yarn and sewn finish

Specify whether the metallic effect comes from metal thread or metallised yarn, and identify the supporting textile fibres. Agree braid width, thickness, pattern, flexibility, colour, surface gloss, roll length and permitted joins. Keep an approved physical sample showing both faces and a cut end.

State whether the braid will be sewn onto clothing, furnishing fabric or craft products. Trial it on the intended fabric using the proposed stitching and care method. Ask for fibre composition information for the garment maker's labelling. For dyed textiles in prolonged skin contact, confirm with HSE whether the UK REACH azo dye restriction applies.

Check exposed metallic ends and snagging against the intended use. For children's clothing, decorative cords and loops must be safe; do not approve their placement from appearance alone.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 6,000 metres of decorative metallic braid on rolls, illustrative only under 5808 10 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,600. Duty at 4% is £264. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,864, so it is £1,372.80. Import taxes total £1,636.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £264 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Finish: compare colour and gloss with the approved sample; check for tarnishing, dull patches, exposed core yarn and flaking metallic surfaces.

Construction: measure width and thickness, inspect braid consistency and edges, and check that cutting and sewing do not release sharp or loose strands.

Care performance: wash or clean the braid with the intended fabric using the agreed care method; check colour transfer, shrinkage, puckering and loss of metallic finish.

Rolls: measure sampled roll lengths, inspect joins and crushed sections, and match colour references and batch labels to the packing list. Use the inspection guide to prepare the checking brief.

What goes wrong

A matching gold or silver colour can hide a different yarn construction. Replacement yarn may feel stiffer, catch on fabric or lose its finish during cleaning. Metallic threads can tarnish, while shrinkage in the supporting yarn can pucker an otherwise sound seam.

Approve a sewn and cleaned sample rather than an untouched swatch alone. Record the yarn construction and finish in the order, and compare production rolls with that sample before dispatch. Investigate colour differences and excess joins before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on decorative metallic braids from China?

The supplied tariff data, read on 2 October 2026, shows 4% duty for braids in the piece under 5808 10 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Are metallic ribbons classified as decorative braids?

Construction matters. Woven ribbons belong to heading 5806 rather than the braid line. Send a sample and yarn specification when confirming the commodity code.

Can decorative metallic braid be washed?

Agree the care method with the supplier and test the braid sewn onto its intended fabric. Check tarnishing, colour transfer, finish loss and seam puckering before approving production.

What should I specify for gold-coloured braid?

Specify the yarn construction, supporting fibres, colour, gloss, width, thickness and flexibility. Approve a physical sample; a colour photograph does not establish the material or care performance.
