Sourcing corrugated steel culverts from China

Corrugated steel culvert pipes under the selected 7306 lines carry 50% UK duty from China; the published background describes 0% where a steel quota applies. Confirm the seam, shape and size before choosing a code, and check the applicable construction product route. Cambridge China Bridge sources corrugated steel culvert pipes.

Culvert pipe classification and UK duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7306 covers other iron or steel tubes, pipes and hollow profiles, including welded, riveted and similarly closed products. The table gives candidate lines according to seam construction, material and cross-section. Confirm applicability to your drawings; check large circular pipes and assembled structural plate culverts separately. See the wider spiral-welded steel pipe guide.

The supplied snapshot records 50% duty from China on every selected line, with no separate trade remedy, suspension or import control listed on those lines. The published background describes 0% within applicable steel quotas and 50% outside them; confirm availability with your customs broker. It also records 90.6% anti-dumping duty on certain small welded non-alloy circular pipes, so a smaller drain pipe needs its own check.

Send your broker the steel grade, external dimensions, cross-section, seam details and photographs before confirming the commodity code. Do not use a welded-pipe code for a mechanically closed seam simply because the supplier calls both products spiral pipe.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify the corrugation, seam and buried installation

Specify clear opening, external dimensions, corrugation pitch and depth, base-metal thickness, steel grade, section length and end treatment. State whether the seam is welded, riveted or mechanically locked. Agree coating type and thickness, repair method, coupling bands, gaskets and fasteners. Ask the project designer to confirm the pipe against flow, cover depth, traffic loading, bedding, backfill and water or soil exposure.

For sale in Great Britain, check whether the exact culvert product has a designated standard or a technical assessment route. CE marking remains accepted for construction products. Under the CE route, products covered by a harmonised standard or an obtained European Technical Assessment require a declaration of performance, subject to applicable derogations. Match the documents to the pipe and intended use rather than accepting a generic steel certificate.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: a contractor's batch of corrugated lock-seamed culvert pipe under 7306 90 00 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 50% is £18,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,000, so it is £10,800. Import taxes total £28,800; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £18,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry: measure the opening, ovality, corrugation profile, section length and end shape against the approved drawing, both before loading and on arrival.

Steel and coating: match material certificates to batch markings, measure base-metal and coating thickness separately, and inspect corrugation crests, cut edges and seams for bare areas or damage.

Seams and joints: inspect weld continuity or lock-seam engagement, trial-fit adjoining sections and coupling bands, and check gasket seating and fastener completeness.

Packing and records: check supports prevent crushing and rubbing, identify nested sections and loose fittings, and photograph arrival damage before unloading. Use the agreed brief for quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Thin steel, flattened corrugations, damaged galvanising and distorted ends can leave a pipe that will not fit its bands or match the designer's assumptions. A nominal diameter alone does not settle joint compatibility. Approve a joint assembly and packing method before production, then compare the delivered batch with the same drawings.

Buying the pipe does not settle installation permission. In England, work on or near main rivers is regulated by environmental permitting. For an ordinary watercourse, contact the local council or internal drainage board to check whether land drainage consent is needed. Resolve the site position before committing to a culvert design.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on corrugated steel culvert pipes from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot lists 50% on all selected lines. The published background describes 0% within applicable steel quotas; ask your broker to confirm eligibility and availability.

What commodity code does a corrugated steel culvert use?

There is no universal culvert code. Confirm the material, cross-section, external size and whether the seam is welded or mechanically closed. Check large circular pipes and structural plate assemblies separately.

Do corrugated steel culvert pipes need CE marking?

Check the exact product's standard or technical assessment route. CE marking remains accepted in Great Britain; a CE construction product needs the supporting performance documents applicable to that route.

What should I check when steel culvert pipes arrive?

Check ovality, corrugation profile, steel and coating thickness, seam condition and coupling fit. Record crushed ends, coating abrasion and missing bands, gaskets or fasteners before accepting the delivery.
