0% duty on the supplied copper article lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 7419 covers other articles of copper. This guide concerns finished roof flashing and associated components. Copper sheet and strip have a separate heading, so distinguish formed flashing from sheet stock. The stamped-only table entries apply only to components that have not been further worked.

Every supplied line carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is separate from customs duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the material, drawings and manufacturing sequence, rather than the supplier's description alone. For related copper articles used on buildings, see copper rainwater gutters.

Specify the roof junction and formed profile

Identify chimney, abutment, valley or parapet use. Supply a drawing showing developed width, thickness, finished length, bend angles, upstands, hems, laps and handed corners. Specify copper grade, temper and surface finish, and agree dimensional tolerances. Ask for the mill certificate and approve a formed sample against the roofer's installation detail.

Agree compatible fixings, jointing materials and packing with the installer. Legitimately CE-marked construction products can continue to be supplied to the Great Britain market. Ask a compliance adviser to establish whether a designated standard or technical assessment covers the actual product and intended use, and agree the supporting documentation before ordering. See testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of formed copper chimney and abutment flashings for a roofing merchant under 7419 80 90 98, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,800, so it is £4,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match mill certificates to the batch and ordered grade and temper; investigate any difference between the certificate and supplied material.

Dimensions: measure thickness, developed width, finished length, bend angles and upstands against the approved drawing; check mating pieces fit together.

Forming and joints: inspect bends for cracks, hems for sharp edges and fabricated joints for gaps; trial-fit corners and overlaps against the installation detail.

Surface and packing: check for dents, scratches and uneven finishes; inspect separators and supports, then repeat these checks on arrival. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Thin material, unsuitable temper and tight bends can leave flashing that cracks during fitting or loses its intended shape. Incorrect handed corners, short upstands and mismatched laps create site alterations and potential water-entry paths. Approve the formed sample with the installer before releasing production.

Unsupported lengths can buckle in transit, while rubbing between nested pieces damages the surface. Agree packing that supports the profile and separates visible faces. Distinguish acceptable surface ageing from scratches, dents and forming defects in the acceptance criteria.
