Copper bellows: 0% duty under heading 7419

Heading 7419 covers other articles of copper. The table shows candidate lines for finished bellows and separately supplied copper components, including articles not further worked after casting, moulding, stamping or forging. These are classification alternatives, not interchangeable descriptions of a finished expansion joint.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all supplied lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. This describes the tariff record, rather than approval for a particular pressure-system application.

Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, material, manufacturing process and intended function. Ask your customs broker to check whether the complete assembly belongs in this heading. For another bellows material, see the nickel bellows guide.

Specify movement, pressure and copper grade

Specify the copper or copper-alloy grade and temper, wall thickness, convolution profile, overall length, end connections and joining method. State the fluid, operating temperature, pressure or vacuum, axial compression and extension, lateral movement and required cycling performance. Agree whether movement limits apply separately or in combination, and ask for test records matching the proposed design.

Official guidance includes expansion joints within pressure-system piping. The Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations regulate design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. Ask a compliance specialist to assess the intended assembly and applicable exclusions before ordering. Use testing and certification support to define the evidence needed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 custom copper expansion bellows assemblies, illustrative only; classification assumed under 7419 80 90 98, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,800, so it is £4,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match the material certificate and batch identification to the agreed copper grade and temper; investigate substitutions before accepting the batch.

Geometry: measure connection dimensions, overall length, convolution spacing and accessible wall thickness against the drawing; check for dents, uneven forming and misaligned ends.

Integrity and movement: review leak-test records and agreed movement-cycle results; check joints for cracking and samples for permanent deformation after the agreed test.

Arrival condition: check that packaging supports the ends without crushing the convolutions, openings are protected and internal surfaces are clean. Record transit damage using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A bellows can fit the pipework yet fail the application. Thin or uneven walls, unsuitable temper, damaged convolutions and weak end joints can cause leakage or permanent deformation. A static leak test alone does not demonstrate movement endurance. Ask for evidence covering the agreed pressure, temperature and movement conditions together.

Installation can also force a bellows outside its agreed movement envelope through misalignment or twisting. Have the system designer confirm supports, anchors and installation position, and agree handling instructions before dispatch. Compare incoming goods with the approved drawing and tested sample.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on copper expansion bellows from China?

For bellows correctly classified under heading 7419, every supplied line carried 0% duty on 30 September 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code should I use for copper bellows?

7419 80 90 98 is a candidate for other finished copper articles. Confirm the assembly's function and construction with your customs broker; the product name alone does not settle classification.

Do pressure-equipment rules cover expansion bellows?

Official guidance includes expansion joints within pressure-system piping. The regulations cover pressure equipment above 0.5 bar, subject to scope and exclusions. Assess the intended assembly before ordering.

What should I ask the factory to test?

Agree material verification, dimensions, joint integrity, leak testing and movement-cycle testing under the intended service conditions. A leak-test result alone does not establish fatigue performance.
