Sourcing coconut-shell carbon from China

Coconut-shell activated carbon from China carries 0% UK duty across the relevant lines. For public drinking-water use in England and Wales, confirm the applicable conformity or approval route with the Drinking Water Inspectorate, and check the grade's shipping classification. Cambridge China Bridge sources coconut-shell activated carbon.

Zero duty on coconut-shell activated carbon

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 3802 covers activated carbon alongside activated natural mineral products and animal black. The activated-carbon lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension. Ordinary coconut-shell granular and powdered carbon fall within 3802 10 00 90; the table separates these forms under the same code.

The tariff attaches import waste controls and also flags export waste controls. For spent carbon or material offered for regeneration from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste requirements before shipment. For waste entering England under notification controls, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

Confirm the commodity code against the composition and activation process. Coconut-shell feedstock alone does not establish eligibility for the specialist vapour-recovery line. Finished filter cartridges need separate classification. See the wider activated carbon and filter aids guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify the shell source and adsorption performance

State coconut shell as the feedstock and agree whether reactivated material is acceptable. Specify granular or powdered form, particle-size distribution, iodine number, moisture, ash, hardness and apparent density. Record whether the grade is acid washed and agree the acidity test. Match the laboratory methods and acceptance criteria to the approved sample, then trial the carbon in the intended process.

For public drinking-water treatment by water companies in England and Wales, confirm the applicable water quality requirements with the Drinking Water Inspectorate. Ask whether conformity with the appropriate standard and all specified national conditions of use removes the need for individual product approval, and whether approval is required for other grades. Establish the route for the exact grade before ordering. Check your UK REACH duties as an importer.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 tonnes of granular coconut-shell activated carbon; illustrative order, not a quotation under 3802 10 00 90, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,500, so it is £6,500. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check feedstock records, activation records and batch references against the purchase specification; investigate any undeclared coal-based or reactivated material.

Adsorption: have an independent laboratory compare the batch iodine number with the agreed specification and retained sample; use a process trial to assess suitability for your application.

Physical properties: check particle-size distribution, hardness, moisture, ash and apparent density; compare fines and rinse behaviour with the approved sample.

Packing: check bag seals, batch markings, net weight and signs of moisture ingress; retain representative samples before releasing the lot.

What goes wrong

A sample can perform well while the shipment contains weaker granules, excess moisture or a different feedstock. Weak granules generate dust, blind filters and blacken initial rinse water. A low iodine number or high ash result warrants investigation, but neither result alone proves the feedstock. Check the manufacturing records as well as the laboratory results.

Shipping arrangements can fail when the supplier's transport paperwork describes a different grade. Some activated-carbon grades self-heat in bulk. Ask for the self-heating test report for the exact grade and have the freight forwarder confirm its shipping classification before booking. Keep transport evidence separate from drinking-water suitability and adsorption test results.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on coconut-shell activated carbon from China?

The relevant activated-carbon lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Can Chinese coconut-shell carbon be used for public drinking water?

For water companies in England and Wales, confirm with the Drinking Water Inspectorate which standards and national conditions of use apply to the exact grade, and whether individual product approval is required.

How do I check that the carbon is really coconut shell?

Check feedstock and production records alongside independent batch testing. Compare ash, density, hardness and adsorption results with the approved sample; a single test does not establish origin.

Can coconut-shell activated carbon ship as non-dangerous goods?

Ask your freight forwarder whether the exact grade can ship as non-dangerous goods, taking account of its self-heating test results and any other applicable classification criteria. Obtain the report for the exact grade and confirm the classification with your freight forwarder.
