Sourcing coated knitted coveralls from China

Coated knitted protective coveralls from China carry 8% to 12% UK duty, depending on the fabric. Coveralls sold as PPE for Great Britain need the conformity assessment appropriate to their risks, a UKCA or CE mark, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Cambridge China Bridge sources coated knitted protective coveralls.

Duty by coated knitted fabric

Heading 6113 covers garments made up of knitted or crocheted fabrics of headings 5903, 5906 or 5907. For these protective coveralls, establish the knitted substrate and coating material before choosing the code. Garments of woven coated fabric fall under heading 6210.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 November 2026, rubberised knitted fabric garments under 6113 00 10 00 carry 8% duty from China. Other coated knitted fabric garments under 6113 00 90 00 carry 12%. The supplied tariff records list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for either line.

Confirm the commodity code using the fabric specification and a material sample. A protective claim does not identify the coating or substrate. Our wetsuits and coated rainwear guide covers the wider heading.

Specify the protective barrier and garment construction

Define the intended task, hazards and protection claimed. Ask the factory to identify the PPE risk category and conformity assessment route appropriate to those risks. For supply in Great Britain, protective coveralls need the relevant UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity and instructions in English. Match the supporting test reports to the exact fabric, seams and closure construction offered.

Specify the knitted fibre, coating material, coating thickness, stretch, seam construction and any sealing tape. Agree hood shape, wrist and ankle closures, zip flap, size measurements and whether the garment is reusable. For reusable designs, agree washing instructions and checks after washing. Ask for help with testing and certification before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,000 plastic-coated knitted protective coveralls under 6113 00 90 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £29,500. Duty at 12% is £3,540. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,040, so it is £6,608. Import taxes total £10,148; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,540 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fabric: compare the bulk material with the approved sample. Inspect against light for pinholes and thin coating, then flex it to check for cracking, peeling or separation from the knit.

Seams and closures: inspect the crotch, underarms, hood junction and zip ends. Check stitching, tape adhesion and gaps beneath the closure flap against the agreed construction.

Fit: measure garments across the ordered sizes. Have wearers bend, reach and crouch to check crotch strain, sleeve movement and gaps at wrists, ankles and the hood.

Documents and labels: match the garment model to its declaration and reports. Check the conformity mark and English instructions. The importer must indicate its name and postal address on the PPE, with a packaging exception where this is not possible. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A sound fabric sample can become a weak finished coverall when needle holes, lifting seam tape or an exposed zip interrupt the barrier. Another failure is coating that cracks when the wearer crouches. Check the assembled garment as well as the fabric, and compare bulk construction with the approved sample.

Reports for a different coating or seam design leave the buyer unable to assess the protection actually supplied. Treat waterproofness and chemical protection as separate purchasing questions. Ask what each report tested, which hazards it addresses and whether washing or material substitutions change the evidence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on coated knitted protective coveralls from China?

Rubberised knitted fabric coveralls carry 8%; other coated knitted fabric coveralls carry 12%. The supplied tariff records list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no suspensions.

Do protective coveralls need CE or UKCA marking?

For Great Britain, coveralls supplied as PPE need the relevant UKCA or CE marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. The conformity assessment route depends on the risks covered.

Does a waterproof test prove chemical protection?

Assess them separately. Ask for reports addressing the chemicals and exposure conditions claimed, and check that the tested fabric, seams and closures match the coverall you are buying.

What should I inspect when the coveralls arrive?

Check coating pinholes and peeling, seam sealing, zip-flap coverage and fit when bending. Match garment labels, declarations and reports to the supplied model and approved construction.
