UK duty depends on the coated fabric

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6113 covers garments made from knitted or crocheted fabrics of headings 5903, 5906 or 5907. For sauna garments within this heading, rubberised knitted fabric under 6113 00 10 00 carries 8% duty from China; other coated knitted fabric under 6113 00 90 00 carries 12%.

The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. They contain only the commodity lines shown in the table. These rates concern qualifying coated knitted garments; a supplier's description of an item as a sauna suit does not establish its classification.

Confirm the commodity code using a fabric sample, coating composition and construction details. Woven coated garments fall under heading 6210; coatings invisible to the naked eye can lead to ordinary knitted garment classification. See the wider wetsuits and coated rainwear guide.

Specify the coating, fit and intended use

Specify the knitted backing fibre, coating material, coating side, finished fabric weight and thickness. Identify whether the order is a separate jacket and trousers or a joined garment. Approve chest, waist, hip, rise and limb measurements, elastic recovery, zip construction and seam reinforcement. Check movement while bending, reaching and squatting.

For sale in Great Britain, textile labels must show fibre content. For rubber parts in direct and prolonged skin contact and plasticised PVC coatings, confirm any applicable UK REACH restrictions on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalates with the relevant authority. Ask for laboratory reports covering the actual bulk materials, rather than a different fabric from the same supplier.

Consumer products sold in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Include heat retention, skin contact and intended exercise conditions in the safety review. Agree care instructions and use warnings based on that review. Ask for evidence behind slimming or performance claims before approving packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 coated knitted sauna suits; FOB value and freight are illustrative. under 6113 00 90 00, invoiced at £7,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,700. Duty at 12% is £924. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,624, so it is £1,724.80. Import taxes total £2,648.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £924 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fabric and coating: compare bulk material with the sealed sample; flex and stretch it to check cracking, peeling, tackiness and separation from the knitted backing.

Fit and seams: measure across the ordered sizes; check crotch and underarm seams during movement, zip operation, elastic recovery and reinforcement at stressed points.

Washing and contact: follow the agreed care method, then inspect coating adhesion, dimensional change and colour transfer. Check the inside surface for rough seams and exposed zip edges.

Arrival and labels: inspect for dampness, mould and surfaces sticking together in folded packs. Compare fibre wording, care instructions, sizes and colour assortments with the approved order. Plan records using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A visually similar replacement fabric can change stretch, coating durability and tariff classification. Coating can peel at folds or split around stitched seams; trousers can tear at the crotch when the sample was approved without movement checks. Keep sealed fabric and garment samples, and require approval before material substitutions.

A loose approval sample can become restrictive after washing, while packed garments can arrive with coated surfaces stuck together. Compare washed production samples with the agreed measurements and inspect garments from different cartons. Keep unresolved coating, fit or label discrepancies separate from accepted stock.
