Sourcing coated folding boxboard from China

Coated folding boxboard from China carries 0% UK duty across the relevant lines in heading 4810. Confirm with the relevant authority whether virgin wood fibre requires timber due diligence before first placement on the GB market and what food contact evidence is needed for food packaging. Specify layer structure and test crease performance. Cambridge China Bridge sources coated folding boxboard.

UK duty on coated folding boxboard

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant coated folding boxboard lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines.

Heading 4810 covers paper and paperboard coated with kaolin or other inorganic substances, with no other coating, supplied in rolls or rectangular sheets. For folding boxboard, establish the composition and bleaching of each layer. The kraft line in the table is an alternative only where its chemical-fibre and weight criteria are met.

Confirm the commodity code using the mill's fibre breakdown, coating description and supply format. Plastic-coated or wax-coated paper belongs in heading 4811. For wider heading coverage, see coated duplex paperboard.

Specify layers, stiffness and crease performance

Agree the fibre composition of each layer, coated faces, grammage, thickness, moisture, shade and stiffness in both directions. State sheet dimensions or reel width, diameter and core size, together with grain direction for the carton layout. Approve a print, scoring and folding trial using the intended carton pattern.

Confirm with the relevant authority whether virgin wood-fibre board falls within the UK Timber Regulations and what due diligence the business first placing it on the GB market should carry out. Ask how recycled products and mixed virgin and recycled material are treated. Obtain the mill's fibre-source records before ordering.

For food packaging, confirm the applicable food contact safety requirements with the relevant authority. Ask for grade-specific food contact evidence and migration or residue testing suited to the intended use. Where recycled fibre is present, include mineral oil residues in the testing brief.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 60 tonnes of coated folding boxboard, each layer bleached under 4810 92 10 00, invoiced at £48,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £53,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £53,000, so it is £10,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Physical properties: compare grammage, thickness and moisture from different reels or pallets with the agreed tolerances and the mill's lot certificate.

Folding performance: score and fold the approved carton pattern in the intended grain direction; check crease cracking, coating separation and stiffness.

Print surface: compare shade with the approved sample and run a print trial to check coating pick, surface defects and consistency between lots.

Arrival condition: inspect reel ends, cores, sheet edges and pallet wrapping for damage or moisture; record curl and keep affected lots identifiable.

What goes wrong

Matching grammage alone does not establish carton performance. Low thickness or stiffness can leave cartons bulging, while the wrong moisture condition causes curl. Weak coatings pick during printing or crack at the crease. A grade substitution can change the layer structure even when the mill uses the same sales description.

Keep an approved sample and a written grade specification. Compare each lot certificate with the order, inspect packaging before loading and repeat the folding trial on arrival. Let board condition to the pressroom before printing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on coated folding boxboard from China?

The relevant heading 4810 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data, read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers folding boxboard?

The code depends on layer composition and bleaching. Multi-ply board has separate lines for every layer bleached, only one outer layer bleached and other constructions. Confirm the mill specification before declaring.

Does folding boxboard need timber due diligence?

Confirm with the relevant authority whether virgin wood-fibre board requires timber due diligence when first placed on the GB market, whether recycled products are excluded and how the virgin fibre in mixed products should be assessed.

What should I check before ordering food carton board?

Obtain grade-specific food contact evidence and suitable migration or residue tests. Specify fibre content, and include mineral oil residue checks where recycled fibre is present.
