Sourcing coated duplex paperboard from China

Coated duplex paperboard from China carries 0% UK duty across the relevant multi-ply lines, with no listed trade remedies. Virgin wood fibre requires timber due diligence for the GB market; food packaging needs food contact evidence. Cambridge China Bridge sources coated duplex paperboard.

Zero duty on coated duplex paperboard

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 19 October 2026, the relevant multi-ply paperboard lines under heading 4810 carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or import controls for these lines.

Heading 4810 covers paperboard coated with kaolin or other inorganic substances, with or without a binder and with no other coating, in rolls or rectangular sheets. For duplex board, establish which layers are bleached rather than classifying by the white face alone. The table separates sheets and reels within the same tariff lines.

Ask the mill for the layer construction, fibre composition and coating details, then confirm the commodity code. Paper coated with plastics or wax falls under heading 4811. See the wider coated paper and board guide for other grades.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 19 October 2026.

Specify the face, backing and converting performance

Specify whether the board has a grey or white backing, its layer construction, recycled and virgin fibre content, coating composition, grammage, thickness and moisture tolerance. Agree shade and surface finish against a retained sample. State sheet dimensions or reel dimensions, grain direction and the stiffness needed for your carton design.

Approve a print, crease and fold trial using your intended inks, adhesive and carton pattern. Request a mill test certificate for each lot and agree how coating pick, delamination and crease cracking will be assessed.

Confirm with the relevant timber-regulation authority what timber due diligence applies to the importer first placing the board on the GB market, including the treatment of virgin, recycled and mixed fibre. For food packaging board, confirm the food contact evidence needed with the relevant food-safety authority. Request migration and relevant residue testing for the intended use, particularly with recycled fibre; see food contact materials.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 60 tonnes of coated duplex paperboard in sheets under 4810 92 30 00, invoiced at £48,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £53,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £53,000, so it is £10,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions and identity: check sheet squareness, grain direction, reel dimensions, backing colour and lot identification against the order and approved sample.

Physical properties: compare grammage, thickness, moisture and stiffness in both directions with the agreed tolerances and mill certificate.

Coating and folds: check shade, print adhesion and surface pick, then crease and fold samples to reveal cracking or separation between layers.

Arrival condition: inspect pallet wrapping, sheet edges, reel ends and cores for crushing, wet patches and curl. Record affected lots before converting.

What goes wrong

A white coated face can conceal a different backing or fibre mix from the approved sample. Low thickness or stiffness gives weak cartons, while uneven moisture causes curl and feeding problems. Weak coating picks during printing, and poor layer bonding opens at folds.

Keep the approved board and converted carton as comparison samples. Check each lot before printing, let the board condition to the pressroom, and investigate changes in moisture, shade or crease behaviour before using the affected stock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on coated duplex paperboard from China?

The relevant multi-ply lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or import controls are listed for these lines.

Which commodity code applies to grey-backed duplex board?

4810 92 30 00 covers coated multi-ply board with only one outer layer bleached. Confirm the actual layer construction and coating before using it; a white face alone does not establish the code.

Can recycled duplex board be used for food packaging?

Do not approve it from appearance alone. Obtain food contact evidence for the intended use, including migration and relevant residue tests. Recycled fibre can contain mineral oil residues from printing inks.

What should I test before ordering duplex board?

Check grammage, thickness, moisture, stiffness and shade, then run a print, crease and fold trial on your carton pattern. Check coating pick, delamination and crease cracking.
