Sourcing cleaned ostrich feathers from China

Cleaned ostrich feathers from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant forms, with no trade remedy recorded. Products must come from an establishment approved to export to Great Britain; confirm the applicable treatment and animal by-product documents with APHA before shipping, rather than relying on washing alone. Cambridge China Bridge sources cleaned ostrich feathers.

Zero duty, with treatment and import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, heading 0505 covers feathers and bird parts not further worked than cleaned, disinfected or treated for preservation, plus feather powder and waste. Loose cleaned ostrich feathers for decoration fall within the other-feathers line, 0505 90 00 00, subject to confirmation of their processing and use. The table separates product forms under the same code.

The supplied reading records 0% duty for goods from China, no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. This line carries veterinary, CITES and waste import controls, plus CITES and waste export controls. These controls need to be assessed against the actual material and shipment; the tariff listing alone does not establish that every consignment needs every permit.

Ask your customs broker to confirm the veterinary entry documents, including whether a common health entry document is required, and resolve protected-species or waste requirements before dispatch. Confirm the commodity code using the species, intended use and full processing description. For related feather products within the heading, see the cleaned turkey feathers guide.

Specify feather shape, grading and treatment

Specify ostrich species and source population, natural colour, feather length, plume width, shaft condition and the acceptable proportion of broken or sparse feathers. Agree whether feathers are straight or naturally curved, how they are counted and how bundles are packed. Keep an approved sample showing acceptable fullness, dust and odour.

Treated feathers may come from any trading partner, including China, but the producing establishment must be approved to export to Great Britain. Check the actual processor through factory verification. Ask APHA to confirm the applicable treatment records and commercial documents, including any processor, consignment, treatment and avian-disease information, and whether any notification is needed for your exact shipment.

For feathers supplied as consumer products in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Assess sharp quill ends, shedding and remaining treatment residues against the intended use; a clean appearance is not a safety assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a small wholesale batch of cleaned white ostrich feathers under 0505 90 00 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,400, so it is £480. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the species, source, processor and batch marks to supplier records and consignment documents.

Grading: compare length, plume width, fullness, curvature and natural colour with the retained sample; separate broken shafts and sparse feathers.

Condition: open bundles from across the shipment and check for damp, mould, odour, dust, attached tissue and crushed plumes.

Packing: check bundle counts, protective wrapping and carton condition; compare arrival results with the pre-shipment checks in the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Buying by length alone can produce long feathers with sparse plumes, bent shafts or uneven colour. Tight packing can crush the feather structure, while damp bundles can develop odour or mould. Agree acceptance criteria against a physical sample and check the bulk goods before loading.

A supplier’s description of ‘washed feathers’ does not establish their treatment status; confirm with APHA whether the treatment and import conditions are acceptable before dispatch. Check species and source population with APHA to establish whether CITES applies, and obtain the applicable permits if it does. If material is classed as waste, confirm its shipment route with the broker and environmental authority. Waste under notification controls cannot ship until the destination, dispatch and transit authorities have consented.
