Sourcing chalkboards from China
Chalkboards from China carry 2% UK import duty under heading 9610, with no trade remedy recorded in the supplied tariff data. Consumer chalkboards sold in Great Britain must be safe. Specify the writing medium, surface and fixing method before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources chalkboards.

UK duty on chalkboards
Heading 9610 covers slates and boards with writing or drawing surfaces, whether or not framed. Ordinary chalkboards fall within commodity code 9610 00 00 00. The table shows chalkboard formats sharing this code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 November 2026, the duty on goods from China is 2%. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this line.
Confirm the commodity code using the actual construction and intended use. For other writing-board surfaces and electronic-board classification boundaries, see the whiteboards guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted chalkboards | 9610 00 00 00 | 2% | None |
Specify the chalkboard surface and mounting
Specify whether the board is for ordinary chalk or liquid chalk markers. Agree the substrate, coating, colour, usable writing area, overall dimensions, frame material and cleaning method. Test the intended writing medium on an approved sample, including cleaning after the writing has been left on the surface.
For wall boards, agree hanging orientation, fixing positions and installation instructions. For tabletop and freestanding signs, agree hinges, opening restraints and folded packing. State whether magnetic performance or outdoor exposure is required, and test those claims on the finished sample.
Consumer chalkboards supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Check secure fixings, smooth edges and stable supports. Where reasonable, producers must identify themselves and the product or batch on the product or packaging to allow traceability.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 framed tabletop chalkboards, illustrative only under 9610 00 00 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £27,000. Duty at 2% is £540. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £27,540, so it is £5,508. Import taxes total £6,048; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £540 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Writing surface: write and erase with the agreed chalk or markers; check staining, patchy coverage, coating damage and cleaning instructions.
Board and frame: check flatness, frame joints, exposed edges, splinters and the attachment of trays and hanging hardware.
Supports: check hinges, opening restraints and stability; confirm wall hardware matches the approved specification.
Packing and identification: check face protection, corner protection, carton condition and agreed product identification. Compare arrival samples with the approved sample and record damage before repacking.

What goes wrong
A board sold as suitable for liquid chalk can retain marks after cleaning. Coatings can rub away, panels can bow and frame joints can loosen. Freestanding signs can wobble when their opening restraints are poorly fitted. Approve the writing and cleaning test before production.
Faces can arrive scratched where boards rub together, while unprotected corners split or dent. Specify separators and corner protection, then inspect packed samples before dispatch. Use the quality inspection guide to agree what the inspection should cover.
