UK duty on ceramic washbasin pedestals

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6910 covers ceramic sanitary fixtures, including washbasin pedestals. Porcelain or china pedestals fall under 6910 10 00 00; other ceramic pedestals fall under 6910 90 00 00. The supplied facts contain only these commodity lines. For the wider heading, see our ceramic Belfast sinks guide.

Both lines carry 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It attaches an import waste control, an export waste control and a cultural-object export licence measure. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste declaration for new pedestals and whether any attached measure affects your shipment.

For waste imports to England under notification controls, the exporter in China must apply to the competent authority in the dispatch country for consent and follow its procedures. Confirm the waste status before shipping damaged stock or scrap. For new goods, give your broker the ceramic body description, drawings and intended use to confirm the commodity code.

Specify the pedestal and its matching basin

Name the basin model the pedestal must fit. Agree total height, footprint, upper contact profile, rear opening, pipe clearance and fixing arrangement against a drawing and an assembled sample. State whether it is a floor-standing pedestal or a wall-mounted semi-pedestal, and which fixings are supplied. Record the intended support arrangement so installers do not have to guess.

Specify ceramic body, glaze colour and acceptable appearance against the approved basin and pedestal sample. Ask for installation instructions and evidence supporting any strength claim. Importers placing products on the UK market need to demonstrate compliance with relevant safety requirements. Where a designated standard or UK technical assessment covers the construction product, check the applicable marking and declaration of performance before ordering; confirm coverage through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 60 porcelain washbasin pedestals under 6910 10 00 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,200. Duty at 6% is £132. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,332, so it is £466.40. Import taxes total £598.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £132 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: assemble sampled pedestals with the named basin and check contact surfaces, alignment, fixing access and clearance around the waste pipe.

Shape: measure height and footprint against the drawing; check for distortion, rocking on a level surface and cracks around openings.

Glaze: compare basin and pedestal colour under the same lighting; inspect visible faces for pinholes, crazing, chips and uneven coverage.

Packing: check cushioning around the upper rim and base, separation between pieces, model identification and carton counts. Repeat the damage checks on arrival. Use our quality inspection guide to brief the inspection.

What goes wrong

A pedestal can look correct in a photograph yet fail to fit the basin. A mismatched contact profile, distorted base or misplaced opening can leave the assembly unstable or block access to the pipework. Approve an assembled sample and keep its drawing with the order.

Glaze shade differences become obvious when the basin and pedestal are installed together. Chips at the upper contact surface and cracks around the rear opening can be missed inside intact cartons. Photograph packing before dispatch and inspect unpacked pieces on arrival before distributing the stock.
