Sourcing ceramic circuit boards from China

Ceramic printed circuit boards from China carry 0% UK duty across the listed heading 8534 lines. Classify by circuit construction, rather than ceramic material alone. Business-to-business component parts are outside the hazardous-substances rules, but an in-scope finished assembly must comply. Cambridge China Bridge sources ceramic printed circuit boards.

Zero duty on ceramic printed circuits

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8534 covers printed circuits. Its listed lines distinguish multilayer circuits consisting only of conductor elements and contacts, other such circuits, and circuits with other passive elements. Ceramic substrate material alone does not identify the appropriate line. The table separates substrate options sharing a code.

All listed lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the fabrication drawing and details of any integrated or mounted components. Do not assume an assembled electronic module uses the bare-board code. For related construction choices, see metal-core printed circuit boards.

Specify the ceramic and metallisation

State whether the substrate is alumina or aluminium nitride, its grade, thickness and required thermal performance. Specify the metallisation process, conductor material and thickness, track geometry, pad layout, surface finish and dimensional tolerances. Include the circuit artwork and an approved fabrication drawing, with a clear revision reference.

Describe the intended soldering or bonding process and the thermal cycling the board must withstand. Agree acceptance checks for ceramic cracks, edge chips, flatness and metal-to-ceramic adhesion. Ask for material declarations covering the ceramic, metallisation and finish, together with electrical test records.

Under Great Britain's hazardous-substances guidance, component parts sold business to business are outside the regulations' scope, but an in-scope final assembly must comply including its components. The finished-product manufacturer must establish component compliance before incorporation. Agree the supporting material evidence before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 multilayer ceramic printed circuit boards under 8534 00 11 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,500, so it is £4,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Substrate: match material records to the ordered ceramic grade and batch; measure thickness and flatness, and inspect edges and holes for chips or cracks.

Conductors: compare tracks and pads with the approved artwork; check conductor thickness, registration, adhesion and surface finish against the drawing.

Testing: obtain electrical continuity and isolation records for every board; check agreed thermal and adhesion test results on representative samples.

Packing: inspect protective separators and cushioning; check that boards cannot rub or bend in transit and that batch labels match the test records.

What goes wrong

A substituted ceramic grade can miss the required heat-transfer performance even when the circuit pattern looks correct. Poor metal-to-ceramic adhesion can lift pads during assembly, while cracks or chipped edges can remain hidden until handling or thermal cycling. Reject undocumented material or process changes.

Agree acceptance evidence before shipment and retain samples for comparison with repeat batches. Check solderability or bondability using the intended assembly process, rather than accepting appearance alone. Keep artwork revisions and batch records together so a failed board can be traced to its production lot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ceramic printed circuit boards from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% on all listed heading 8534 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Do alumina and aluminium nitride boards use different commodity codes?

Not simply because of the ceramic material. Choose the line by circuit construction, including whether it is multilayer or contains other passive elements.

What should I specify for a ceramic circuit board?

Specify ceramic grade, thermal performance, substrate and conductor thickness, metallisation process, pad geometry, finish, tolerances and the intended soldering or bonding process.

Do bare ceramic boards need hazardous-substances evidence?

Business-to-business component parts are outside these regulations' scope, but an in-scope finished assembly must comply. Obtain material evidence for the finished-product manufacturer.
