Sourcing ceramic lampholder insulators from China

Ceramic lampholder insulators from China carry 0% UK duty when they qualify as ceramic insulating fittings. Bare insulating parts must be distinguished from complete lampholders with electrical contacts. Check ceramic grade, fit and material evidence for the finished assembly. 0% duty on ceramic insulating fittings

Heading 8547 covers insulating fittings for electrical machines, appliances or equipment, wholly of insulating material apart from minor metal components incorporated during moulding solely for assembly. This guide covers ceramic lampholder insulating parts without electrical contacts. The table shows product variants under the same ceramic commodity line, rather than separate tariff categories.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, code 8547 10 00 00 carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Give your broker the drawing, material specification and details of any metal parts to confirm the commodity code. See insulating fittings for the wider heading and replacement lampholders for complete products. The import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.

Specify the ceramic body and assembled fit

Specify the ceramic grade, such as steatite or alumina, and whether surfaces are glazed or unglazed. Provide a drawing showing contact pockets, wire passages, mounting holes, shoulders, wall thicknesses and tolerances. Identify surfaces that locate the contacts or bear against the mounting hardware.

Agree operating temperature, dielectric performance, assembly method and packing. Approve samples fitted with your intended contacts, screws and lamp interface. Ask for test evidence matching the ceramic grade and assembled design, rather than relying on a report for a visually similar body.

For Great Britain, official hazardous-substance guidance excludes component parts sold business-to-business from its scope, but the finished assembly must comply when placed on the market within that scope. Obtain material declarations and supporting evidence for the ceramic, glaze and any inserts so the assembler can assess compliance. Arrange testing and certification around the actual assembly.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of ceramic lampholder insulating bodies without contacts under 8547 10 00 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,700. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,700, so it is £3,140. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match the ceramic grade, glaze specification and material evidence to the supplied batch and approved sample.

Fit: measure contact pockets, mounting holes and locating shoulders against the drawing; trial-assemble with the intended hardware.

Condition: inspect for cracks, chipped edges, distorted bodies and glaze defects, especially around thin walls and mounting holes.

Performance and packing: test samples to the agreed electrical and thermal specification; check that separators protect ceramic edges and carton labels distinguish variants.

What goes wrong

Firing shrinkage can leave contact pockets or mounting holes outside tolerance. A body may look acceptable yet crack when screws are tightened because a bearing surface is uneven or an edge is chipped. Glaze build-up can obstruct seating surfaces and wire passages.

A changed ceramic grade or glaze can undermine the performance established by the approved sample. Record the material, drawing and assembly method in the order, compare bulk goods with the retained sample, and inspect again on arrival for transport damage. Use the quality inspection guide to organise the checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ceramic lampholder insulators from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty under 8547 10 00 00, with no listed trade remedy, suspension or import control. Confirm that the goods qualify as ceramic insulating fittings.

Can I use this code for a complete ceramic lampholder?

Do not assume so. This guide covers insulating parts without electrical contacts. Send the complete product drawing and details of its conducting parts to your broker for classification.

What should I put on the ceramic part drawing?

Specify ceramic grade, glaze, contact pockets, wire passages, mounting holes, locating shoulders, wall thicknesses and tolerances. Identify the hardware and contacts used for sample assembly.

Do business-to-business ceramic components need hazardous-substance evidence?

Official guidance excludes business-to-business component parts from scope, but the finished assembly must comply when in scope. Obtain material evidence for the ceramic, glaze and inserts to support the assembler.
