0% duty on ceramic chimney pots

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 November 2026, heading 6905 covers roofing tiles, chimney pots, cowls, chimney liners, architectural ornaments and other ceramic constructional goods. Ceramic chimney pots fall within 6905 90 00 00. The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China, no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions. This product family has only one relevant tariff line.

The tariff attaches an import waste control. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For a shipment from China classified as waste, confirm the applicable requirements with your customs broker before dispatch. The record also lists waste export controls and a DCMS export licence measure; ask your broker to confirm their relevance if you later export the goods.

Confirm the material and intended use through finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see clay roof tiles. The worked order is illustrative; see UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify the pot, outlet and seating base

Specify whether the pot is for a working flue or decorative use. Agree the profile, overall height, clear internal opening, base dimensions, seating surface, wall thickness, colour and finish on a drawing. Include the connection details for any liner or cowl, and have the intended installer review the sample and fitting arrangement.

For construction products sold in Great Britain, CE marking remains available. Ask the supplier to identify the applicable product specification and provide the exact model's performance declaration, marking information and supporting reports. Check that these describe a chimney pot rather than a roof tile or flue liner.

Agree frost resistance evidence for the supplied ceramic body and firing, alongside any heat performance needed for the intended use. Approve a physical sample and packing method before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative palletised order of ceramic chimney pots, not a quotation under 6905 90 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £4,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,500, so it is £3,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the opening, base and seating surface against the approved drawing; trial the intended liner or cowl connection.

Body: inspect inside and outside for cracks, chipped rims, distortion and uneven wall thickness; isolate damaged pots on arrival.

Performance and identity: match the model and batch to the agreed test reports and documentation, including frost resistance evidence.

Finish and packing: compare colour with the approved sample; check that pots are separated, cushioned and restrained against movement. Record arrival damage before unpacking the whole delivery.

What goes wrong

A pot can match the photograph but have an opening or base that does not fit the chimney. Firing distortion can leave the seating surface uneven, while thin rims and ceramic-to-ceramic contact lead to chips during transport. Colour can also vary between firings.

Poor frost performance can cause cracking or surface loss outdoors. Reports for a different ceramic product do not establish the ordered pot's performance. Match documents to the model, trial the fitting and inspect before loading. See quality inspection explained.
