0% duty on relevant ceramic lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 6914 covers other ceramic articles. For ceramic bee drinking cups entered here, porcelain, hand-made common pottery and other ceramics carry 0% duty from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. Stoneware and other terracotta variants share the residual code in the table.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur and waste import controls. Imports of cat and dog fur and products made from it are banned. For waste subject to notification controls entering England, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste requirements if the shipment might be waste.

Give your broker the body composition, photographs, intended garden use and details of any supplied stakes or fittings to confirm the commodity code. For the wider ceramic garden range, see ceramic bird baths.

Specify the drinking cup and its mounting

Specify the ceramic body, cup profile, usable water depth, rim shape and textured landing surfaces. Agree whether the cup sits on the ground or fits a supplied stake, and approve the assembled sample. Set dimensions, wall thickness, glaze coverage and colour against a physical master. State whether stakes and fittings are included.

Check handling risks from sharp rims, broken glaze and exposed stake ends. Ask for water-retention and freeze-thaw results for the actual body and firing before approving an outdoor or frost-resistance claim. Agree cleaning and winter-storage instructions with the supplier.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 4,000 stoneware bee drinking cups; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 6914 90 00 90, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,500, so it is £3,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Water retention: fill sampled cups to the agreed level and check for seepage, cracks and water loss through the ceramic body.

Cup and glaze: compare the profile and colour with the master; check landing textures, rim chips, pinholes, crazing and sharp glaze runs.

Mounting: assemble supplied stakes and fittings; check cup seating, loose joints and stability in the intended installation.

Packing: unpack arrival samples and check rims, bases and stake sockets; confirm dividers prevent contact and that fittings cannot strike the ceramic. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A cup may look correct but leak through an under-fired body, have a smooth landing surface unlike the sample, or fit its stake loosely. Glaze runs can leave sharp edges, while frost can crack a water-absorbing body. Treat these as separate acceptance checks rather than relying on appearance.

Rims and mounting sockets can chip when cups touch in cartons or metal stakes move during transport. Trial the complete retail pack, inspect after the agreed handling test and compare arrival damage with dispatch records. Keep an approved sample for repeat orders.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ceramic bee drinking cups from China?

The relevant lines under heading 6914 carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff reading. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded.

Are ceramic bee drinking cups frost-proof?

Do not assume this from the glaze or appearance. Ask for freeze-thaw results for the actual ceramic body and firing, and agree winter-storage instructions.

What should I check on arrival?

Check water retention, rim chips, sharp glaze, landing surfaces and stake fit. Unpack samples to identify damage caused by ceramic contact or loose fittings.

Are these cups intended for people to drink from?

This guide covers garden cups supplying water to bees. Specify that intended use clearly; a human drinking vessel needs a separate classification and compliance review.
