Duty on carbon-fibre tubes

Heading 6815 includes carbon-fibre articles for non-electrical uses. Plain carbon-fibre tubes are covered by the description of other articles of carbon fibres, code 6815 13 00 00. The table shows tube variants under that same line, rather than separate tariff classifications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant line carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this line.

Confirm the commodity code using the material composition, processing and intended use. Finished goods such as bicycle frames or fishing rods are classified by what they are. For related material choices within the heading, see our carbon-fibre pultruded rods guide.

Specify the tube wall and lay-up

Put outside diameter, inside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness and tolerances on the drawing. Specify the fibre grade, resin system, manufacturing process and fibre orientation through the wall. Agree whether glass fibre is permitted, the surface finish, cut-end condition and any bonded inserts. A woven outer surface does not establish the construction beneath it.

Describe the actual bending, twisting and clamping loads. Agree sample tests against the drawing and intended assembly, including insert bonding where relevant. Keep an approved sample and require agreement before changes to the fibre, resin or lay-up.

In Great Britain, general product safety rules apply to products intended for, or reasonably likely to be used by, consumers. Businesses importing or selling consumer products are responsible for their safety. Identify the applicable product rules for the intended use before agreeing any CE or UKCA marking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 5,000 carbon-fibre tubes for a small-business stock order; illustrative figures under 6815 13 00 00, invoiced at £38,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £39,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £39,800, so it is £7,960. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check diameters, wall thickness, length and straightness against the drawing, including fit with the actual mating parts.

Construction: section an agreed sample to inspect the lay-up, hidden glass fibre, voids and resin-rich areas; compare material documents with the order.

Surface and ends: inspect under raking light for pinholes, wavy weave and print-through; check cut ends for splinters, cracking and separation between layers.

Performance and packing: compare sample test results and tube weights with the agreed specification; check insert bonds and protection against crushing during transport. See quality inspection explained.

What goes wrong

A tube can look right while containing glass fibre beneath a carbon skin, a substituted fibre grade or voids in the wall. These problems can reduce strength without an obvious surface defect. A finish approved for appearance should therefore be supported by checks on construction and agreed mechanical tests.

Poor dimensional control causes loose joints or difficult assembly. Damaged cut ends and weak insert bonds can fail during fitting or use. Agree inspection methods and acceptance criteria before production, then investigate discrepancies before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on carbon-fibre tubes from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for code 6815 13 00 00, read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

How do I check that a carbon-fibre tube contains no glass fibre?

Specify whether glass fibre is permitted, obtain material documents and section an agreed sample to inspect the wall. A carbon weave on the outside does not prove the inner construction.

Do carbon-fibre tubes need CE or UKCA marking?

Identify the product rules for the intended use before deciding on marking. Do not treat the tariff heading or a supplier's generic certificate as the answer.

What should I put on a carbon-fibre tube drawing?

Include outside and inside dimensions, wall thickness, length, straightness, tolerances, fibre grade, resin, lay-up, finish and end details. Agree tests for the actual loads and joints.
