Sourcing carbon fibre laminate plates from China

Carbon fibre laminate plates from China classified as carbon fibre articles carry 0% UK duty, so the duty range is zero throughout. The main rule is to check UK REACH restrictions for the chemicals in the resin and coatings before supplying plates in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources carbon fibre laminate plates.

Zero duty on carbon fibre articles

Heading 6815 includes carbon fibre articles for non-electrical uses. Cured carbon fibre laminate plates are candidates for 6815 13 00 00, covering other articles of carbon fibres. The table shows plate variants sharing that candidate code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for goods from China. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this line. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the material composition, cured condition and intended use. Prepregs may be classified by their resin, while identifiable finished goods may be classified by what they are. For related articles within the wider heading, see carbon fibre tubes.

Specify the laminate beneath the surface

Specify cured plates, fibre grade, resin system, fibre volume fraction and the complete lay-up, including fibre directions. State whether the laminate must contain carbon fibre throughout or may include glass fibre or another core. A woven surface alone does not establish the internal construction.

Put length, width, thickness tolerances, flatness, cut-edge finish and any hole positions on the drawing. Agree the face finish separately from mechanical performance. For load-bearing plates, agree tensile, flexural and interlaminar shear testing on representative laminates, with acceptance criteria linked to the intended use.

UK REACH generally covers chemical substances in articles, and restrictions address chemical risks in articles. Obtain the resin and coating composition and check applicable restrictions before supplying the plates in Great Britain. Agree the supporting material declarations and testing arrangements before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 5,000 small rectangular carbon fibre laminate blanks for a parts business; illustrative order, not a quotation under 6815 13 00 00, invoiced at £38,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £39,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £39,800, so it is £7,960. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check thickness across the plate, overall size, flatness and any machined features against the approved drawing.

Construction: section a sample to check the lay-up, internal glass fibre, voids and resin-rich areas; compare weight with the agreed specification.

Surfaces and edges: inspect under raking light for pinholes, weave distortion and print-through; check cut edges for chips and delamination.

Records: match fibre certificates, resin identification and laminate test reports to the delivered batch. Agree sampling through the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A plate can have a convincing carbon weave on its face but glass fibre inside. Voids, resin-rich regions or the wrong fibre directions can undermine the agreed performance. Surface appearance and thickness alone cannot verify the laminate; compare sectioned samples and mechanical results with the approved construction.

Cutting can reveal edge damage that was hidden on the original sheet. Specify acceptance of the delivered cut plates, including their edges. Carbon dust from cutting and sanding is conductive and an irritant, so obtain handling information and plan dust control before machining.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on carbon fibre laminate plates from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for carbon fibre articles under 6815 13 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that the plates fit this classification.

How can I check whether a plate is carbon fibre throughout?

Section a representative sample and compare its internal layers with the agreed lay-up. A carbon weave on the surface can conceal glass fibre inside.

Which tests should I request for load-bearing carbon fibre plates?

Agree tensile, flexural and interlaminar shear tests on representative laminates. Set acceptance criteria for the intended load and fibre directions rather than relying on a surface sample.

Does zero duty remove chemical compliance checks?

No. UK REACH generally covers substances in articles. Obtain resin and coating composition information and check applicable restrictions before supplying plates in Great Britain.
