Sourcing capacitive liquid level probes from China

Capacitive liquid level probes from China carry 0% UK duty under the relevant heading 9026 lines. Electronic models need an electromagnetic compatibility scope check; for hazardous-area models, confirm the applicable explosive-atmosphere requirements with the relevant product safety authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources capacitive liquid level probes.

Duty and classification for liquid level probes

Heading 9026 covers instruments measuring or checking liquid flow or level and other liquid or gas variables. A complete electronic capacitive liquid level probe is a candidate for 9026 10 29 00. The other table entries provide classification context for non-electronic instruments, other electronic apparatus and separately supplied parts; they are not interchangeable codes for the same probe.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls recorded. The heading's pressure-instrument lines carry mercury controls: the UK Trade Tariff attaches those controls, and an importer buying pressure instruments should confirm the requirement with their customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using the probe's function, electronic assembly and whether it is a complete instrument or a part. See the ultrasonic liquid level sensors guide for wider heading context.

Specify the liquid, tank and probe assembly

State whether you need continuous level measurement or a point-level alarm. Specify the actual liquid, its temperature range, changes in composition, coating tendency and cleaning chemicals. Agree probe length, active sensing length, insulation material, wetted materials, process connection, tank material and the reference electrode or earthing arrangement.

Set the supply voltage, output signal, connector pin assignment, cable arrangement and required behaviour when the probe or supply fails. Ask for a sample test in the intended liquid and tank arrangement, including filling, draining and a coated probe.

For electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations apply, subject to exceptions. Check the supplied assembly's scope and request model-matched conformity documents and test reports. For equipment intended for potentially explosive atmospheres, confirm the applicable regulations with the relevant product safety authority; request the declaration and any certificate it confirms is required for the equipment's category. Arrange testing and certification before approving the production specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of capacitive liquid level probes; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 9026 10 29 00, invoiced at £3,500 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,300, so it is £860. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Probe construction: compare insertion length, insulation coverage, threads, seals and wetted materials with the approved drawing; check for bent rods, damaged insulation and loose fittings.

Liquid response: test samples in the intended liquid during filling and draining; compare readings or switching points with the agreed acceptance limits and repeat after coating and cleaning.

Electrical behaviour: check supply compatibility, connector wiring, output scaling and the agreed response to disconnection or loss of power.

Identification and documents: match model labels to the order, calibration records and supplied conformity documents; include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A probe demonstrated in water may behave differently in oil or a changing mixture. Deposits on the insulation can shift readings or leave an alarm active after draining. A different tank material or reference arrangement can also change the response. Agree the test liquid and installation arrangement before accepting a sample.

Wrong insertion lengths leave part of the tank unmeasured, damaged insulation exposes the electrode, and mismatched threads or seals cause installation problems. Keep the approved drawing and sample test record tied to the production model, including any changes to electronics or insulation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on capacitive liquid level probes from China?

The relevant heading 9026 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff facts, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm the code for the complete probe or separately supplied part.

Can the same capacitive probe measure water and oil?

Do not assume so. Specify both liquids and test the sample in each, using the intended tank and reference arrangement. Agree whether recalibration is needed when the liquid changes.

What documents should I request for a hazardous-area probe?

Request the declaration of conformity, any certificate required for the equipment category, and the equipment group, category and protection marking. Match them to the actual model.

How do I check a probe before accepting the batch?

Compare construction with the approved drawing, test filling and draining in the intended liquid, check coating effects, and verify wiring, outputs and the agreed failure response.
