Sourcing canned baby corn from China
Canned baby corn from China can attract 16% duty as other preserved vegetables, or 4% plus £7.80 per 100 kg net drained weight if classified as sweetcorn. Confirm the variety and code before ordering. Imported canned vegetables must meet GB food hygiene and safety standards. Cambridge China Bridge sources canned baby corn.

Duty depends on the corn variety and preparation
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2005 covers vegetables prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid, not frozen, excluding products of heading 2006. For canned baby corn, check the variety rather than relying on the sales name. Other preserved vegetables under 2005 99 80 98 carry 16%; sweetcorn lines carry 4% plus £7.80 per 100 kg net drained weight. See the wider preserved vegetables guide.
The supplied tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on the selected lines. Under 2005 80 00 30, qualifying sweetcorn cobs for industrial processing have a 0.00% suspension subject to authorised-use customs supervision. Simple repacking does not qualify, and processing by retail or catering undertakings is excluded. Do not budget for this relief on ordinary finished tins. The other selected lines have no suspension.
The tariff attaches veterinary and organic import controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm the veterinary requirement against the complete recipe. Organic imports from China into Great Britain need a certificate of inspection for each consignment, issued by the exporter's control body; check the relevant non-UK organic registers. Confirm the commodity code using the variety, cob diameter, preservation method and intended use.

Specify tender cobs and the canning process
Specify whole or cut baby corn, cob length and diameter, colour, tenderness, permitted broken pieces, net quantity and drained weight. Agree the brine recipe, salt level, any additives, can lining, closure type and remaining shelf life at delivery. Approve a drained sample as well as an unopened tin.
Low-acid canned vegetables depend on a validated heat process for commercial sterility. Request thermal processing and incubation records linked to the supplied batch. Imported tinned vegetables must meet the same hygiene standards and safety procedures as food produced in GB. Treat the factory's sample and its production records as separate checks.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of canned baby corn, assuming this classification is confirmed under 2005 99 80 98, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,500. Duty at 16% is £2,960. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,460, so it is £4,292. Import taxes total £7,252; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,960 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Cobs: drain sampled tins and compare size, colour, tenderness and broken pieces with the approved specification; cut through cobs to check for fibrous centres.
Fill: weigh the drained solids against the declared drained net weight, and compare liquid level and headspace with the agreed specification. Solid food packed in liquid must show its drained net weight.
Cans: inspect seams, dents, rust, leaks and swelling; open samples to check the lining. Match thermal processing and incubation records to the batch.
Labels: check ingredients, best before date, UK food business address and matching batch identification. Compare any sulphite declaration with testing records. Plan the sampling with the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
Oversized or late-harvested cobs can be fibrous, while excessive processing can leave them soft. Broken tips and uneven grading change the appearance of a drained serving. Too much brine can hide a shortfall in solids, so compare drained samples rather than the unopened tin's weight alone.
Faulty seams or inadequate processing can produce leaking or swollen cans. Damaged lining and corrosion warrant investigation. Hold affected stock for assessment and compare the batch records with retained samples. A supplier calling the product baby corn does not settle whether the sweetcorn tariff lines apply.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on canned baby corn from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot gives 16% under 2005 99 80 98, or 4% plus £7.80 per 100 kg net drained weight under the sweetcorn lines. Confirm the variety and classification.
Does canned baby corn need a drained weight on the label?
Yes. Solid food packed in liquid must show the drained net weight. Check drained samples against that declaration and the purchase specification.

What paperwork is needed for organic baby corn from China?
Each organic consignment into Great Britain needs a certificate of inspection issued by the exporter's control body. Check the relevant non-UK organic registers before shipment.
