Sourcing bamboo shoots and canned vegetables
Preserved vegetables such as bamboo shoots, water chestnuts and beans in brine pay 16% UK duty from China with no anti-dumping duty, but bamboo shoots in packs over 5 kg are suspended to 0% until 2028. Canned food must meet the tin limit, sulphites need allergen labelling, and food is zero-rated for VAT. Cambridge China Bridge sources preserved vegetables.
Canned bamboo shoots, water chestnuts and other preserved vegetables from China pay 16% UK duty; bulk bamboo shoots are 0% to 2028. Tin, sulphites and more.

16%, or 0% for bulk bamboo shoots
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 26 September 2026, bamboo shoots, shelled beans, sweet peppers and most other vegetables prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid, not frozen, carried 16% duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure. An autonomous suspension set bamboo shoots in immediate packings of more than 5 kg net at 0% until 31 December 2028, so catering and industrial packs pay nothing while retail tins pay 16%. Frozen vegetables and pickles in vinegar have their own headings; see the frozen vegetables guide and confirm the commodity code.

Tin, sulphites and processing
Regulation 1881/2006 on contaminants, as it applies in Great Britain, limits inorganic tin in canned foods other than beverages to 200 mg/kg, which unlacquered cans holding acidic vegetables can exceed after long storage. Bamboo shoots and water chestnuts are often treated with sulphites to keep them white, and above 10 mg/kg sulphites must be declared and emphasised as an allergen; the label also needs the drained weight, ingredients, best before date and a UK food business address.
Low-acid canned vegetables depend on a validated heat process to be commercially sterile, so ask for the plant's thermal process records and incubation tests, and its food safety certification. See the dried vegetables guide and food labelling and contact rules.
Worked duty example
A hypothetical order, not a quote: 20,000 kg of bamboo shoots in brine, bought for £30,000 free on board with £3,000 of freight and insurance, so the customs value is £33,000. Packed in catering pails of more than 5 kg under 2005 91 00 10, the 16% rate is suspended to 0% until 31 December 2028, so no duty is due. The same shoots in retail tins of 5 kg or less under 2005 91 00 90 would pay 16%, which is £5,280. Preserved vegetables are food and zero-rated for VAT, so no import VAT is due either way; the pack size is the difference. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
What goes wrong
Preserved vegetables fail on sterility, cans and labelling. Under-processed cans swell or leak, can seams are faulty, and plain tinplate cans release tin into acidic brine over time. Sulphite residues exceed what the label declares or are not declared at all, drained weight falls short of the label, texture is soft or fibrous because the shoots were harvested late, and packs are declared under the wrong code so the suspension is lost or wrongly claimed.
Review thermal process and incubation records for each lot, check double seams on sample cans, test tin on stored samples and sulphur dioxide at an accredited laboratory, measure drained weight against the label, check texture and colour against the approved sample, confirm lacquered cans for acidic packs, and check the pack size against the commodity code before declaring.
