Camping-chair duty depends on construction

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 November 2026, heading 9401 covers seats and their parts. The selected complete camping-chair lines with wooden or metal frames carry 0% duty for goods from China, whether upholstered or non-upholstered. These lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no tariff suspension.

The tariff attaches CITES, cat and dog fur, and torture-and-repression import controls. For listed-species materials, confirm the required CITES permits for the China shipment with your broker. Cat and dog fur products are banned. The torture measure covers specified restraint chairs; have your broker check the tariff footnotes against the product. Export controls are also listed; check their relevance if re-exporting.

Send photographs, frame materials and details of the fabric seat and any filling to your broker to confirm the commodity code. Distinguish a fabric sling from padded upholstery rather than relying on the supplier's description. See the folding-chair guide for wider seating coverage. Allow for 20% import VAT when preparing your budget.

Specify the frame, sling and folding joints

Specify whether the chair has a folding frame, removable poles or a reclining back. Record frame material, tube dimensions, pivot construction, bracing, foot caps and the method of securing the seat fabric. Agree seat height, usable seat width, packed dimensions, carry-bag construction and the intended user load. Approve a complete sample that opens, supports the user and packs away as intended.

Specify fabric composition, weave, seam construction and reinforcement around pole pockets and armrest fixings. Agree strength, stability, repeated-folding and corrosion checks with the laboratory. For upholstered chairs sold for home use, confirm applicable furniture fire safety requirements with the relevant authority and obtain evidence matching the cover, filling and construction. Arrange testing and certification before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: 400 upholstered metal-frame camping chairs under 9401 71 00 00, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £25,500, so it is £5,100. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Folding joints: open and close sampled chairs; check full engagement of any locks, loose rivets, sticking pivots, sharp edges and accessible finger traps.

Frame and feet: compare tube dimensions, welds, bracing and foot caps with the approved sample; check distortion, rocking and stability on the agreed test surfaces.

Seat fabric: inspect seam tension, reinforcement, pole pockets and attachment points; compare fabric and filling with the approved specification and test reports.

Packing and arrival: unpack chairs, check coating abrasion, bent poles, damp fabric and missing components, then trial the instructions and carry bag. Use the inspection guide to agree shipment checks.

What goes wrong

Fabric can tear where a frame end bears against an unreinforced pocket, while loose pivots or distorted bracing can let a chair fold unexpectedly. Narrow feet can sink into soft ground. Agree the intended surfaces and test the complete production construction, including the seat attachments, rather than approving its appearance alone.

A lighter tube, different rivet or substituted fabric can change how the chair performs. Tight packing can bend poles or rub through coatings, and damp fabric can arrive mouldy. Record approved components and packing, retain the sample and isolate chairs with structural or folding defects on arrival.
