Cabasa duty and material controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 9206 covers percussion musical instruments. Acoustic cabasas fall within 9206 00 00 00 at 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows cabasa variants sharing the same commodity line. See the wider percussion guide.

The tariff attaches ivory and CITES import controls and a cat and dog fur prohibition. Before buying an item containing a listed ivory species, check it is registered or certified as exempt; ask your customs broker to confirm its import documents. Commercial imports containing cat or dog fur are prohibited. For CITES-controlled materials, confirm the permit requirements with the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Chinese management authority.

The record also lists export controls, including cultural-object licensing; confirm these separately if re-exporting. Give your broker the cabasa's photographs, materials and intended use to confirm the commodity code, particularly for children's play products. The illustrative order values are hypothetical; see import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify the bead chain, cylinder and grip

Specify cylinder diameter and length, textured metal sleeve, bead material and diameter, chain arrangement and tension, handle material, grip finish and overall weight. Approve a playing sample: the beads should move across the textured sleeve under hand pressure without binding. Record the desired scraping sound and resistance so the factory can compare production against the sample.

Consumer instruments supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Cabasas designed or intended for play by children under 14 fall within the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. For those models, check UKCA or CE marking, technical documentation and UK importer details, with attention to detachable beads, noise and chemical safety. Agree the intended users before approving packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 400 wooden-handled cabasa percussion instruments, illustrative only under 9206 00 00 00, invoiced at £4,800 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,700. Duty at 2% is £114. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,814, so it is £1,162.80. Import taxes total £1,276.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £114 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Playing action: rotate the handle while holding the beads against the sleeve; compare resistance and sound with the approved sample and check for snagging.

Beads and sleeve: check chain connections, bead retention, sharp edges, sleeve seams, rust and peeling plating.

Handle: check attachment security, cracks, splinters, grip adhesion and any movement between the handle and cylinder.

Packing: check individual protection prevents bead chains rubbing against neighbouring instruments; inspect for crushed cylinders, moisture and damaged finishes on arrival.

What goes wrong

Tight chains bind and give an uneven scraping sound; loose chains snag or slip. Rough sleeve seams catch beads, weak connections release them, and loose handles turn independently of the cylinder. Reject substitutions in bead material, sleeve texture or handle fixing unless a replacement sample has been approved.

Unprotected instruments can arrive with dented sleeves, scratched finishes or corrosion. Compare arrival samples with the approved instrument and retain photographs of defects before distributing stock. Use the quality inspection guide to agree the checks before dispatch.
