Sourcing bus air conditioning units from China

Bus air conditioning units from China carry 2% UK duty across the selected complete-unit and parts lines, with no additional trade remedy recorded. For HFC pre-charged units entering Great Britain, check annual imports against the F-gas registration and quota rules before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources bus air conditioning units.

UK duty and refrigerant controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8415 covers air-conditioning machines with a motor-driven fan and temperature and humidity changing elements. Bus passenger cooling belongs first under the motor-vehicle branch: distinguish units pre-charged with HFCs from other units. Separately supplied parts need their own classification.

The selected lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. All attach fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and a restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances. Give your customs broker the refrigerant identity, shipped charge and gas-content declaration, and confirm the applicable customs documents.

Confirm the commodity code from the supplied assembly and refrigerant, rather than its roof-mounted appearance. The parts rows are candidates, not a rule covering every compressor, motor or controller. See the wider air conditioners and heat pumps guide.

Specify the bus installation and cooling duty

Identify the bus model, roof opening, mounting points, permitted roof load, casing envelope and service access. Define whether the compressor is engine-driven or electrically powered, and agree belt or electrical interfaces, hose connections, duct arrangement, controller communication and condensate routing.

Specify cooling capacity at the intended outside and cabin temperatures, airflow against the installed duct resistance, electrical input and compressor operating conditions. Include passenger loading and door-opening conditions in the test brief. Request performance records for the supplied configuration, wiring diagrams, installation instructions and matching service parts.

For HFC pre-charged equipment entering Great Britain, confirm with the Environment Agency or your customs broker whether your annual imports require registration, quota authorisations or a quota-coverage declaration of conformity. Vehicle air-conditioning is included in the pre-charged equipment guidance. Confirm the annual position before shipment and ask testing and certification to review the model-specific evidence.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 bus air-conditioning units for a fleet maintenance business; FOB and freight values are illustrative under 8415 20 00 10, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 2% is £640. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,640, so it is £6,528. Import taxes total £7,168; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £640 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit and structure: compare mounting points, roof gasket, connection positions and service clearances with the approved bus drawings; inspect casing distortion and loose fasteners.

Cooling and controls: witness operation at the agreed conditions, record temperatures and airflow, and check fan speeds, compressor control, restart behaviour and fault messages.

Leaks and drainage: review pressure and leak-test records, inspect joints and hoses, and test condensate drainage in the intended mounting orientation.

Arrival and identity: inspect crushed fins, damaged connectors and transport restraints; match model plates, refrigerant details and supplied documents. Agree sampling through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A catalogue cooling figure may assume conditions that differ from a loaded bus with frequent door opening. Restricted ducts, mismatched compressor drive and incompatible controller communication can leave the cabin warm despite an apparently suitable unit. Freeze the installation drawings and operating conditions before production.

Roof seals can admit rain, drains can retain condensate, and unsupported hoses or brackets can suffer vibration damage. Agree a sample installation and witnessed cooling, drainage and vibration checks. Resolve refrigerant discrepancies before dispatch, and confirm the ozone-depleting substance declaration requirements with your broker.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on bus air conditioning units from China?

The selected complete-unit and parts lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff reading records no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension.

Do bus air conditioning units need F-gas quota?

For HFC pre-charged equipment entering Great Britain, confirm with the Environment Agency or your customs broker whether registration and quota authorisations apply to your annual imports. Confirm your annual total before ordering.

Which commodity code covers bus passenger air conditioning?

Start with 8415 20 00 10 for units pre-charged with HFCs and 8415 20 00 90 for other units. Confirm the complete supplied assembly with your customs broker; separately shipped parts need their own check.

What should I specify before ordering a bus air conditioning unit?

Specify the bus model, roof opening and mounting, compressor drive, power supply, duct resistance, cooling test conditions, refrigerant, controller interface, drainage and service access.
