Sourcing burglar alarm systems from China

Burglar alarm systems from China carry 2% UK duty for building alarms, while parts carry 0%. Wireless models must meet radio equipment requirements before sale in Great Britain; relevant consumer-connected models also need product security compliance. Cambridge China Bridge sources burglar alarm systems.

2% on building alarms, 0% on parts

Heading 8531 covers electric sound or visual signalling apparatus, including burglar alarms. Building burglar alarm systems appear under 8531 10 30 00. The table also includes other alarms, separately imported buzzers and parts. These are classification options, not interchangeable codes for a complete kit.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, building alarms and other burglar alarms carried 2% duty on goods from China. Listed buzzers carried 2%, and parts carried 0%. The supplied lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.

Confirm the commodity code using the system function, component list and whether goods arrive as a kit or separately. For cameras and related security products, see CCTV and security cameras.

Specify the panel, sensors and compliance route

Define wired or wireless operation, sensor types, alarm zones, tamper detection, indoor or outdoor sounders, backup battery behaviour and local operation during internet failure. Agree which keypad, door contacts, motion detectors, power supply and mounting accessories belong in each kit. Record firmware and application versions against the approved sample.

For Great Britain, wireless equipment falls under radio equipment rules: the importer must verify conformity assessment and ensure technical documentation, a declaration of conformity and relevant marking. Confirm the applicable electromagnetic disturbance and immunity requirements with the relevant product safety authority. Ask for evidence matching the actual panel, sensors and power supply, using testing and certification where needed.

For in-scope electrical equipment, hazardous-substance compliance needs technical documentation and a declaration of conformity. Relevant consumer products connecting to the internet or a network fall under product security rules and need an accompanying statement of compliance. Electrical equipment producers must register annually; establish who handles this before selling imported systems.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 63 building burglar alarm kits; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 8531 10 30 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Kit contents: compare panel, sensor models, batteries, brackets and wiring accessories with the approved packing list; check connectors and terminal markings.

Alarm functions: trigger door contacts and motion detectors, test arming and disarming, open tamper switches and confirm the correct zone appears.

Failure recovery: disconnect mains power and internet access separately; check backup operation, local sounders, reconnection and retained settings.

Documents and labels: match product identifiers to reports and declarations; wireless equipment must have clear English instructions and safety information. Check application setup and account transfer on a bulk sample.

What goes wrong

A demonstration kit can hide incompatible replacement sensors, weak wireless coverage or firmware that changes alarm behaviour. Test bulk samples with the intended sensor mix and installation layout. Agree how replacement devices pair with installed panels, and record any component substitutions before shipment.

Cloud dependence can leave a sounder working while remote alerts fail. Test the local alarm separately from application notifications and agree responsibility for software support. A report for a different radio module or power supply does not demonstrate the ordered configuration; reconcile model references before accepting the shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on burglar alarms from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 2% for building burglar alarms under 8531 10 30 00 and other alarms under 8531 10 95 90. Parts under 8531 90 00 00 carry 0%, with no listed trade remedy.

What documents do wireless burglar alarms need?

For Great Britain, check conformity assessment, technical documentation, the declaration of conformity, relevant marking and clear English instructions and safety information for the ordered models.

Do connected home alarms need a security statement?

Relevant consumer products connecting to the internet or a network fall under product security rules. A statement of compliance must accompany the product.

How should I inspect burglar alarm kits from China?

Check kit contents, sensor pairing, zone identification, tamper response, backup power and recovery after internet loss. Compare bulk firmware and component models with the approved sample.
