Sourcing breaded prawns from China
Breaded prawns from China under the selected heading 1605 lines carry 20% UK duty across the range. Confirm establishment approval and health-certificate requirements with port health before ordering, and arrange the applicable pre-notification and border checks. Cambridge China Bridge sources breaded prawns.

20% duty on breaded prawns
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 1605 covers prepared or preserved crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates. The selected prawn lines carry 20% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The suspension under 1605 21 90 91 excludes preparations containing different components, so breaded prawns do not qualify.
The tariff attaches veterinary, illegal fishing and organic import controls. Confirm establishment approval and health-certificate requirements for prepared shellfish with port health, alongside the applicable pre-notification and border control post checks. Catch certification addresses the legality of wild-caught inputs; the tariff exempts aquaculture obtained from fry or larvae. Confirm the applicable catch documents with your customs broker. For organic claims, confirm the import requirements with your broker and organic control body; inspection certificates are issued by the exporter’s control body.
The table gives classification candidates, subject to the recipe, species, preparation, shell status, freezing and immediate pack size. Confirm your commodity code before declaring the shipment. The prepared shellfish guide covers the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shelled frozen prepared prawns, non-airtight packs up to 2 kg | 1605 21 10 91 | 20% | None |
| Other shelled prepared prawns, non-airtight packs up to 2 kg | 1605 21 10 96 | 20% | None |
| Shelled frozen prepared prawns, larger non-airtight packs | 1605 21 90 91 | 20% | None |
| Other prepared prawns, larger non-airtight packs | 1605 21 90 99 | 20% | None |
Specify the prawn and its coating
Specify species, farmed or wild origin, prawn size before coating, peeled or tail-on presentation, deveining and whether the flesh is raw or cooked. Agree the prawn share, breadcrumb style, batter recipe, coating weight and acceptable broken pieces. Keep an approved sample for comparison.
State whether the product needs cooking or is ready to eat. Agree cooking instructions, pack size, storage conditions and the texture expected after cooking from frozen. Obtain the complete recipe, including additives and coating ingredients. Labels must highlight allergens and list them in the ingredients; check crustaceans and any wheat, egg, milk or soya used.
Before ordering, ask port health to confirm China-specific residue testing and Chinese-authority declarations for peeled or processed prawns. Check the exporting plant’s approval for the product. Use factory verification to compare the supplier’s production arrangements with your specification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative wholesale batch of frozen breaded prawns in 1 kg bags under 1605 21 10 91, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £34,000. Duty at 20% is £6,800. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £40,800, so it is £8,160. Import taxes total £14,960; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £6,800 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Prawn and coating: compare sampled pieces with the approved sample; check prawn size beneath the coating, deveining, tail presentation, coating adhesion and broken pieces.
Cooking performance: cook samples using the agreed instructions; assess coating crispness, oil uptake, flesh texture and whether the centre cooks consistently.
Weight and cold chain: weigh sampled packs against the declared net quantity; review transport temperature records and look for clumping, excess loose crumbs, damaged seals and signs of thawing.
Labels and documents: compare the ingredient and allergen information with the recipe, and match batch details across packs and shipment documents. Check plant approval and health paperwork. For ready-to-eat products, check evidence against the applicable Listeria criteria. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A thick coating can conceal smaller prawns than the sample. Loose crumbs, exposed flesh and broken tails reduce usable yield. A recipe change can alter frying performance or introduce an allergen that the printed label misses. Thawing and refreezing can leave clumped pieces and a coating that separates during cooking.
Border problems arise when plant approval or health paperwork does not match the product. Agree the document review before dispatch and record responsibility for the cold chain through delivery. Keep suspect stock separate while you investigate differences against the approved specification.
