Sourcing brake drum and disc lathes from China

Brake drum and disc lathes from China carry 2% UK duty across the relevant lines of heading 8458, with no duty variation between them. Confirm the applicable machinery safety, declaration of conformity, accepted marking and English-instruction requirements with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources brake drum and disc lathes.

UK duty on brake drum and disc lathes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8458 covers lathes for removing metal, including turning centres. Its lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to these lines. Ask whether the machine includes refrigerant-containing cooling equipment. Imported F-gas equipment must be labelled correctly. The attached tariff advice does not establish which declaration applies to a particular brake lathe, so confirm the control requirement with your customs broker before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code from the machine layout and control specification. Automatic feed alone should not be treated as proof of numerical control. The table gives classification options rather than interchangeable codes. See the wider lathe guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify brake mounting and cutting capacity

Choose an on-car disc lathe or an off-car bench machine, and state whether drum machining is needed. Specify disc diameter and thickness capacity, drum bore and depth capacity, spindle speed, feed adjustment, tool travel and the workshop electrical supply. List the vehicle hubs and brake parts to be handled, with the matching cones, arbors, spacers and hub adaptors.

Agree acceptance limits and measurement methods for mounted run-out, disc thickness variation, drum roundness and surface finish. Require trial cuts on representative parts. Machinery supply rules remain in force: confirm with the relevant authority the essential health and safety requirements applicable to the lathe and whether it needs a declaration of conformity, UKCA or accepted marking, and English instructions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 6 horizontal brake drum and disc lathes, not numerically controlled (illustrative order and values) under 8458 19 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £3,180 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,180. Duty at 2% is £243.60. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,423.60, so it is £2,484.72. Import taxes total £2,728.32; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £243.60 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mounting: check arbor straightness, spindle run-out, cone seating and adaptor fit. Remove and remount a test part to check repeatability.

Cutting: machine representative discs and drums where applicable. Measure finish and geometry, and check for chatter, taper and uneven material removal.

Safety and documents: check guards, emergency stops, electrical connections and any interlocks. Match the declaration, English manual and nameplate to the delivered model.

Arrival: check transport damage, missing adaptors and tool inserts. Install as instructed and repeat the agreed cutting test. Use the inspection guide to define the inspection record.

What goes wrong

A lathe can run smoothly without producing an acceptable braking surface. Dirty mounting faces, worn cones, a bent arbor or loose tooling can cause run-out and chatter. A trial on an easy sample may hide poor performance on the buyer's actual brake parts. Record the mounting method, tooling and measurements during acceptance.

Incomplete adaptor sets can leave the machine unable to handle the intended vehicles. On-car equipment also needs suitable access and mounting arrangements around the hub. Agree the supplied accessory list and replacement tooling before ordering, then compare the delivered kit with that list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on brake lathes from China?

The relevant lines of heading 8458 carry 2% duty in the tariff record read on 1 October 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension.

Should I buy an on-car or off-car brake lathe?

Choose from the work you do. On-car equipment machines the disc while mounted on the vehicle; an off-car machine uses its own arbor and adaptors. Confirm drum capability separately.

What paperwork should come with a brake lathe?

Require a declaration of conformity, UKCA or accepted marking and English instructions. Check that the documents identify the model supplied, and confirm the attached F-gas control with your customs broker.

How do I test a brake lathe before shipping?

Cut representative brake parts with the agreed adaptors. Measure run-out, thickness variation or drum roundness, and surface finish. Remount the parts to check repeatability and repeat the test after installation.
