UK duty on braided upholstery piping trims

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 5808 covers braids in the piece and ornamental trimmings in the piece without embroidery, other than knitted or crocheted, together with tassels, pompons and similar articles. Braided upholstery piping is the focus here. For the wider product family, see gimp upholstery braid.

Both commodity lines in the supplied tariff data carry 4% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control is listed. The table contains only the available lines; these tariff findings do not establish whether a particular trim is suitable for its intended furniture application.

Ask your customs broker to review a sample, construction drawing and material description before choosing between braids in the piece and other ornamental trimmings. Describe the braided covering, any core and any sewing flange separately. Confirm the commodity code rather than relying on the supplier's description of 'piping'.

Specify the braid, core and sewing flange

State whether you need exposed decorative braided piping or piping with a flange sewn into the upholstery seam. Specify the braid fibre, core material, finished diameter, flange width where present, firmness, colour reference, permitted joins and usable roll length. Approve a physical sample sewn into your actual upholstery fabric, including a curved seam.

Trims sold to consumers must be safe. Domestic upholstered furniture within the scope of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 must comply before sale. Ask the furniture maker or testing laboratory to define the evidence needed for the intended application, and request reports identifying the supplied construction. Obtain fibre composition information for textile labelling; manufacturers and retailers are responsible for compliance.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: mixed-colour rolls of braided piping for an upholstery workshop under 5808 10 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,600. Duty at 4% is £264. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,864, so it is £1,372.80. Import taxes total £1,636.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £264 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile: measure diameter and flange width against the approved sample; check the core stays centred and the braid does not flatten or reveal gaps when bent.

Colour: compare rolls with the approved shade sample and rub the piping against the intended upholstery fabric to check colour transfer.

Sewing: sew a sample into straight and curved seams; check for puckering, twisting, core movement and fraying after the agreed cleaning trial.

Rolls: measure sampled lengths, locate joins and damaged sections, and match colour and batch references to the packing list. Plan these checks with the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A softer replacement core can collapse under the sewing foot, while a tighter braid can make the piping too stiff for corners. Uneven flange width changes the visible piping line. Different dye batches can leave neighbouring cushions with visibly different edges, and dark braid can mark light upholstery.

Keep an approved sewn sample and record the core, braid and flange construction in the order. Check production rolls against that sample before dispatch and repeat the seam trial on arrival. Agree how joins and unusable sections will be recorded so that nominal roll length does not hide a shortage of usable trim.
