Sourcing boat trailers from China
Boat trailers and the listed trailer parts from China carry 0% UK customs duty, with no recorded trade remedies. Settle the road approval route before ordering, then specify loaded weight, hull supports, coupling, brakes and protection against launching-water corrosion. UK duty on boat trailers
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the relevant boat transport trailer and parts lines under heading 8716 carry 0% customs duty for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions for these lines. Heading 8716 also covers other trailers and non-mechanically propelled vehicles; see the wider trailers and caravans guide. For the reverse trade route, see exporting UK trailers to China.
The UK Trade Tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substances restriction to these lines and fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to the listed complete trailers, chassis and axles. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements and declaration documents for the actual goods from China. It also lists a DCMS Export Licence measure: official guidance states that importing cultural objects into Great Britain has no licensing requirement, but the exporting country's rules must be checked where relevant.
A road-going boat transport trailer and a launching trolley should not be classified simply by their shared use with boats. Send drawings, intended use and the assembled or kit condition to your broker, and use finding your commodity code before placing the order. Confirm separately classified accessories rather than assuming every item in the shipment belongs under 8716.

Match the trailer to the hull and launching conditions
Specify the boat's loaded transport weight, including engine, fuel and equipment, alongside trailer unladen weight and payload. Provide hull drawings, keel profile and support positions. Agree roller or bunk layout, adjustment range, winch-post position, bow stop and tie-down points. Check that the supports clear hull fittings and distribute the load without concentrating it on unsupported areas.
State whether launching involves fresh or salt water. Fix steel grade, weld details, galvanising coverage, drainage, fastener materials and bearing seals. Ask how the hubs and brakes are maintained after immersion, and agree replacement bearing, seal and brake part numbers. Specify the lighting-board arrangement and how wiring is protected during launching.
For road use, settle the approval route before ordering and match the documents to the delivered design. Individual Vehicle Approval is available for a single imported trailer or a very small number. For car towing, a trailer weighing over 750kg when loaded must have a working brake system. Include boat and equipment weight when assessing this.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 50 galvanised boat trailers under 8716 39 50 00, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £8,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £48,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £48,000, so it is £9,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Hull fit: trial-fit the intended boat or an agreed hull template; check keel clearance, roller or bunk contact, winch alignment and tie-down access.
Chassis and corrosion: inspect drawbar and frame welds, measure the agreed galvanising thickness, and check coverage inside accessible sections, drainage openings and damaged coating around fittings.
Running gear: compare axle, tyre and coupling ratings with the specification; check bearing play, seals, wheel rotation and fitted brake operation before dispatch and again on arrival.
Identity and lights: match chassis identification and plates to approval documents; test lamps through the agreed plug, check reflectors and inspect connectors and cables for transport damage. Use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A trailer can fit the boat's length yet have too little payload once the engine and equipment are included. Poorly positioned rollers can leave the hull unsupported, while a misplaced winch post prevents secure bow restraint. Confirm fit and loading with the intended boat before accepting the production design.
Thin galvanising, trapped water, damaged seals and unsuitable fasteners create corrosion and bearing problems after launching. Kit shipments can also arrive with missing brackets or a changed axle or coupling. Compare the delivered parts with the approved specification and assembly list, and resolve substitutions before assembly or road use.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on boat trailers from China?
The listed complete boat trailer, chassis, axle and other trailer-parts lines carry 0% customs duty from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.
Do Chinese boat trailers need approval for UK roads?
Settle the road approval route before ordering. Individual Vehicle Approval is available for a single imported trailer or a very small number; check whether an existing approval covers the delivered design.
When does a boat trailer need brakes?
For car towing, the trailer must have a working brake system if it weighs over 750kg when loaded. Include the boat, engine, fuel and carried equipment in the loaded weight.
What should I check on a boat trailer used in salt water?
Check galvanising coverage, drainage, bearing seals, brake condition, fastener materials and protected wiring. Agree the maintenance instructions and replacement bearing, seal and brake part numbers before ordering.
