Sourcing bent annealed glass panels from China

Bent annealed glass panels from China carry 0% UK duty under heading 7006 when unframed and not fitted with other materials. Annealed glass breaks into sharp pieces; doors, low-level glazing and furniture exposed to impact usually need safety glass instead. Cambridge China Bridge sources bent annealed glass panels.

Zero duty on unframed bent annealed panels

Heading 7006 covers glass of headings 7003, 7004 or 7005 that is bent or otherwise worked, but not framed or fitted with other materials. Ordinary bent annealed panels fall within 7006 00 90 00, Other. The table shows product variants sharing that commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, both heading lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. Zero customs duty does not remove import VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the processing description and assembly details. Toughened or laminated safety glass belongs under heading 7007; framed or combined products require classification by the finished article. See the wider worked glass guide.

Specify the curve and intended installation

State explicitly that the panels are bent and annealed. Specify clear, low-iron or tinted glass, thickness, edge finish, holes and cut-outs. Provide a section drawing showing the bend radius, whether it refers to the inner or outer surface, the straight-line distance between the ends, curve depth and any straight ends. Agree tolerances and a matching inspection template.

Approve a sample in the intended supports. Agree acceptable optical distortion, surface marks and colour using the sample and a defined viewing position. Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe. Annealed panels break into sharp pieces, so doors, low-level glazing and furniture where people could hit the glass usually need toughened or laminated safety glass instead.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Mixed-size clear bent annealed glass panels for a display-fitting business, illustrative order under 7006 00 90 00, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £26,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,500, so it is £5,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Curve and fit: compare sampled panels with the agreed template and drawing; check curve depth, end alignment, twist and fit in the intended supports.

Dimensions and edges: measure thickness, overall dimensions and hole positions; inspect polished edges and corners for chips, sharp areas and cracks.

Surface and appearance: inspect for scratches, bubbles, mould impressions and uneven colour; compare reflected and transmitted distortion with the approved sample.

Packing and arrival: check that separators prevent glass contact and shaped supports hold the curve without forcing it; photograph damaged crates and inspect panels before installation. Use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A radius measured from the wrong surface can produce panels that do not fit. Uneven curvature, twisted ends or misplaced holes can make installers force the glass into its supports. Reject the mismatch rather than treating bending or tightening during installation as a correction.

Appearance disputes arise when the buyer approves a flat sample but orders curved panels without agreeing distortion limits. Edge chips and poorly supported crates cause breakage. A satisfactory appearance check does not establish that annealed glass is suitable for an impact-exposed location; settle the intended use before approving production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on bent annealed glass panels from China?

The supplied tariff record, read on 4 October 2026, shows 0% for ordinary unframed bent annealed panels under 7006 00 90 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure listed.

Is bent annealed glass safety glass?

Annealed glass breaks into sharp pieces. Doors, low-level glazing and furniture where people could hit it usually need toughened or laminated safety glass instead.

What drawing should I send the glass factory?

Send a section drawing defining the radius reference surface, curve depth, distance between ends, straight ends, thickness, holes and tolerances. Agree a matching inspection template.

How do I check that curved panels will fit?

Approve a curved sample in the intended supports, then compare production samples with the drawing and template. Check end alignment and twist; do not force a mismatched panel into place.
