Sourcing Beach Umbrellas from China
Beach umbrellas from China carry a flat 4% UK duty across the listed umbrella lines, with no listed trade remedies. Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe; confirm the applicable fibre-labelling requirements for textile canopies with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources beach umbrellas.

A flat 4% duty
Heading 6601 covers umbrellas and sun umbrellas, including garden and similar umbrellas. For beach umbrellas, distinguish garden-or-similar designs from the other umbrella categories shown in the table. Those other categories depend on whether the shaft is telescopic and, for non-telescopic designs, the cover material.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, every listed line carried 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, no suspensions and no attached import controls.
Confirm the commodity code using the complete product specification before shipment. A telescopic pole alone does not settle whether an umbrella belongs in the garden-or-similar category. Separately supplied bases may need separate classification. See the wider umbrellas and parasols guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden or similar sun umbrellas, including beach styles | 6601 10 00 00 | 4% | None |
| Other sun umbrellas with a telescopic shaft | 6601 91 00 00 | 4% | None |
| Other non-telescopic sun umbrellas with woven textile covers | 6601 99 20 00 | 4% | None |
| Other non-telescopic sun umbrellas with other covers | 6601 99 90 00 | 4% | None |
Canopy, pole and sand anchoring
Specify open canopy diameter, fabric composition and weight, rib material, pole diameter, joint overlap, locking method and tilt mechanism. Agree whether the order includes a sand screw, ground spike, base or carry bag. Approve an assembled sample with the actual anchor and write down the intended beach conditions and agreed wind test.
Consumer beach umbrellas supplied in Great Britain must be safe under the general product safety rules. During sample review, assess exposed rib tips, finger traps, accidental collapse and anchoring. Agree clear instructions for assembly, securing the umbrella and taking it down when conditions become unsuitable.
Confirm with the relevant authority whether the umbrella covering needs fibre labelling and which fibre names should be used. Specify the label with the canopy fabric. For any ultraviolet protection claim, ask for a fabric test report matching the ordered material and colour.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 beach umbrellas under 6601 10 00 00, invoiced at £1,800 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,200. Duty at 4% is £88. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,288, so it is £457.60. Import taxes total £545.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £88 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Pole and anchor: assemble samples with the supplied anchoring equipment; check joint fit, clamp grip, insertion markings and resistance to twisting or pulling apart.
Frame and tilt: open and close samples, cycle the tilt lock and check rivets, capped rib ends and sharp edges. Repeat the agreed wind test with the intended anchoring arrangement.
Canopy and labels: compare fabric, stitching, vent construction, colour and print with the approved sample; check fibre labels and that protection reports match the canopy.
Arrival and packing: inspect for bent poles, cracked fittings, corrosion and missing anchors; check that carry bags fit and components cannot damage the canopy. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong
A loose pole joint or slipping tilt lock can let the canopy rotate or collapse. Thin ribs bend, rivets pull through and fabric tears around rib pockets. An anchor shown in the sample photograph may be absent from the shipment, so list every included component in the order.
A fabric protection report does not demonstrate that the whole umbrella remains secure in wind. Check anchoring and frame performance separately. Keep the approved canopy sample and compare production fabric and colour against it before accepting protection claims.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on beach umbrellas from China?
The supplied tariff record, read on 3 October 2026, shows 4% on every listed umbrella line, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Do beach umbrella canopies need fibre labels?
Confirm with the relevant authority whether the covering needs fibre labelling and which fibre names should be used. State its fibre composition accurately.
Does a telescopic beach umbrella use the telescopic umbrella code?
Check whether it belongs in the garden-or-similar category first. The telescopic line sits within the other umbrella category; pole construction alone does not settle classification.
How do I check a beach umbrella's sun protection claim?
Ask for a fabric test report matching the canopy material and colour. Compare production fabric with the approved sample and check wind performance and anchoring separately.
