Duty on base-metal anklets

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 7117 covers imitation jewellery. Base-metal anklets fall within its other base-metal jewellery lines, whether or not plated with precious metal. Hand-made anklets without glass parts have a separate line. The table repeats the relevant codes for different anklet types rather than including unrelated jewellery.

The relevant lines carry 4% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension recorded. The tariff attaches CITES, cat and dog fur, and seal-product import controls. Cat and dog fur products are banned from import. CITES-listed materials need the applicable documentation; seal products are restricted. Confirm any animal-material decoration and the applicable requirements with your customs broker before ordering.

Confirm the construction, glass content and manufacturing method using finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see fashion charm bracelets.

Specify anklet fit, chain and plating

Specify the base alloy separately from the plating, chain style, finished wearable length, extension chain, clasp type and charm positions. State whether length includes the clasp and extension. Approve a physical sample for fit, colour and movement, and record whether stones are glass or another material.

Confirm applicable UK REACH restrictions on cadmium, lead and nickel release from skin-contact parts with HSE. Request laboratory reports matching the anklet, clasp, charms, alloy and finish supplied. A report for an unplated chain does not establish the performance of your plated anklet.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 200 base-metal anklets; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 7117 19 00 90, invoiced at £300 free on board, with £200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £500. Duty at 4% is £20. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £520, so it is £104. Import taxes total £124; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £20 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure wearable length and extension against the order, and check that the clasp can reach each intended adjustment point.

Assembly: operate clasps, check jump-ring closure and charm attachment, and feel for sharp edges or protruding wire ends.

Finish: compare chain, clasp and charms with the approved sample; inspect for bare patches, colour mismatch and peeling.

Documents: match laboratory reports to the supplied materials and finish, and compare pack contents with the order.

What goes wrong

A supplier may quote total chain length while the buyer expects wearable circumference. Weak clasp springs, open jump rings and snagging charms can make an otherwise acceptable anklet unusable. Put the measurement method and attachment details into the order.

Matching colours can conceal different alloys or plating on the chain, clasp and charms. Check the complete assembly rather than accepting a chain-only sample or report. Use quality inspection explained to agree checks before dispatch.
