Sourcing bamboo particleboard from China

Bamboo particleboard from China carries a flat 6% UK import duty, with no listed anti-dumping duty. Confirm the bamboo core and any facing before choosing the code. Confirm with OPSS whether timber due diligence applies when the actual board is first placed on the Great Britain market. Cambridge China Bridge sources bamboo particleboard.

Bamboo composition and a flat 6% duty

Heading 4410 covers particleboard and similar board made from wood or other ligneous materials, with or without organic binders. For bamboo particleboard, use the other-materials line, 4410 90 00 00, as the starting point for classification. The table shows finishes within that same line. For wooden particleboard and OSB, see the wider heading guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied lines all carry 6% duty for goods from China. The bamboo board line has no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. That tariff record does not replace checks on the requirements for placing the board on the market.

Confirm the commodity code using the core materials, manufacturing method and facing. Declare any wood mixed into the bamboo core rather than relying on the supplier's product name. Veneered particleboard is classified under heading 4412, so a wood veneer face needs particular attention.

Specify the bamboo core, binder and intended use

Write the bamboo content and any wood content into the order, together with particle structure, binder, sheet dimensions, thickness tolerance, density, surface finish and intended use. Distinguish particleboard from panels built from bamboo strips or veneers. Approve a cut sample showing the core, then agree checks for bending, internal bond, screw holding, moisture and thickness swelling.

Confirm with OPSS whether timber due diligence applies when the actual particleboard is first placed on the Great Britain market. Gather species, harvest-country and legality evidence before ordering. For construction use, confirm the applicable standard and declaration of performance and marking route for the actual board. CE marking remains available for construction products in Great Britain. Arrange testing and certification checks against the intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative container shipment of raw bamboo particleboard under 4410 90 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £19,500. Duty at 6% is £1,170. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,670, so it is £4,134. Import taxes total £5,304; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,170 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Core: cut sampled sheets and compare the particles, declared composition and density with the approved sample. Check for voids, poorly bonded areas and unexpected wood content.

Dimensions and moisture: measure thickness across each sampled sheet, check squareness and flatness, and record moisture at loading and arrival. Inspect pack edges for swelling, water staining and mould.

Performance and facing: match bending, internal-bond, swelling and formaldehyde reports to the supplied board and binder. Trial the intended machining and fixings, then check faced boards for peeling, chips and colour differences.

Packs and records: check wrapping, edge protection and batch identification. Solid wood pallets and dunnage must meet ISPM15 for imports into Great Britain. Traders must keep supplier and onward-trader records. Use an agreed inspection checklist.

What goes wrong

A bamboo description can conceal a mixed wood core or a different panel construction. Check cut samples against the declared composition before shipment. Weak internal bonding causes crumbling edges and poor fixing performance; moisture causes swollen edges and warped sheets. Decorative faces can hide these defects until the board is cut.

A report for another binder or board does not establish the ordered panel's performance. Ask for reports that identify the supplied product and compare the results with the agreed specification. Hold wet or damaged packs separately on arrival, photograph the labels and defects, and retain samples before machining the boards.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on bamboo particleboard from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 6% for 4410 90 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.

Is bamboo particleboard the same as bamboo plywood?

Check a cut section: particleboard has a particle core, while plywood has layers. Specify the construction before confirming the commodity code.

Does bamboo particleboard need CE marking?

For construction use, confirm the applicable standard and declaration of performance and marking route. CE marking remains available for construction products in Great Britain.

How do I check bamboo particleboard before shipment?

Check core composition, thickness, density, moisture, internal bond, swelling and formaldehyde reports. Trial machining and fixings, and inspect faces and protective packing.
