Sourcing arc welding electrode holders from China

Arc welding electrode holders provisionally classified as welding parts carry 0% UK duty from China. The parts line has a tariff registration control to confirm with your broker. Check the holder's voltage rating against electrical safety rules before sale. Cambridge China Bridge sources arc welding electrode holders.

Duty and classification for electrode holders

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8515 covers electric welding and soldering apparatus and parts. For separately supplied electrode holders, confirm whether the residual parts line 8515 90 80 90 applies. The table shows holder variants against that same provisional line, rather than separate tariff classifications. Complete welding sets need their own assessment; see the welding and soldering machines guide.

The supplied facts show 0% duty from China on this parts line, no listed residual anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. However, the UK Trade Tariff attaches an anti-dumping or countervailing registration control. The importer should confirm the requirement and its application to the specific holder with their customs broker before shipment.

Give your broker the holder drawing, intended welding process, electrical ratings and details of any supplied cable or welding set. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. Import VAT is separate from customs duty; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the jaws, insulation and cable termination

Specify spring-clamp or screw-type operation, electrode diameter range, gripping positions, conductor material, rated current and duty cycle. Agree the cable cross-section, termination method, handle dimensions and replaceable insulation parts. Obtain a sample with the intended cable fitted, rather than approving an empty holder.

Check the designed operating voltage before deciding which electrical safety requirements apply. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations cover equipment designed or adapted for use between 50 and 1,000 volts alternating current and 75 and 1,500 volts direct current. Ask a testing and certification adviser to assess the exact holder and supplied assembly.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 arc welding electrode holders; illustrative order, subject to classification under 8515 90 80 90, invoiced at £4,500 free on board, with £500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,000, so it is £1,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Insulation: check handles, jaw covers and cable entry for cracks, gaps and damage. HSE guidance calls for undamaged insulation on welding electrode holders.

Grip: check the agreed electrode sizes and gripping positions, spring return or screw action, and electrode retention after repeated opening and closing.

Connection: inspect the conductor material, cable fit, terminal tightness and strain relief. Compare the delivered construction with the approved sample.

Load and packing: arrange a controlled test at the agreed current and duty cycle, checking heating and loosening. Check that cartons protect handles and jaws. Put these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A holder can look correct while its jaws grip poorly or its cable termination works loose. Thin conducting parts, uneven jaw contact and poorly fitted cable connections can cause local heating. Brittle insulation can crack during transport or assembly.

Agree acceptance criteria for grip, insulation, connections and heating before production. Keep the approved sample and construction photographs, and require approval before the factory changes jaw material, spring design or insulation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electrode holders from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% on 8515 90 80 90. Confirm classification and the attached anti-dumping or countervailing registration control with your broker.

Do electrode holders need electrical safety assessment?

Check the designed operating voltage and supplied assembly. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations have voltage-based scope; ask for an assessment of the exact product.

What should I specify when buying welding electrode holders?

Specify current, duty cycle, electrode sizes, jaw action, conductor material, insulation and cable termination. Approve a sample fitted with the intended cable.

What should I check when electrode holders arrive?

Check insulation damage, electrode grip, terminal tightness, cable retention and agreement with the approved sample. Arrange controlled load testing against the agreed specification.
