Sourcing stud welding machines from China

Stud welding machines from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected heading 8515 lines. Confirm the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility rules applicable to mains-powered welders, and the machinery safety rules applicable to automatic welding cells, with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources stud welding machines.

Zero duty, with a parts-control check

Heading 8515 covers electric welding apparatus and parts within a wider soldering and welding heading. For stud welders, identify the welding process and whether operation is fully or partly automatic. The table gives candidate categories, rather than a code determined by the sales name. See the wider welding and soldering guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty rate and no suspension. However, the UK Trade Tariff attaches an anti-dumping or countervailing registration control to parts under 8515 90 80 90. The importer should confirm the requirement for the actual Chinese-origin parts with their customs broker.

Send the broker the process description, automation details, photographs and a separate parts list to confirm the commodity code. Do not select a coated-electrode welding category merely because the stud welder uses an inverter power source.

Specify the stud, workpiece and welding process

State whether you need capacitor-discharge or drawn-arc welding. Specify stud material, diameter, length and thread, base-metal material and thickness, surface coating, access and permitted marking on the reverse face. Agree the gun, chuck, cable length, return clamp and any ferrule holders or shielding-gas equipment. Ask the factory to weld your actual stud and sheet combination.

Confirm the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility rules applicable to mains welders with the relevant authority. For automatic welding cells, also confirm the applicable machinery safety rules and CE or UKCA marking requirements. Ask for model-matched declarations and test reports, English instructions and the technical-file arrangements. For machinery, the responsible person must ensure that the technical file is compiled and available on request, and provide information needed for safe operation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 manual drawn-arc stud welding machines for a small distributor under 8515 39 90 00, invoiced at £75,000 free on board, with £4,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £79,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £79,500, so it is £15,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Weld performance: repeat trial welds on the agreed studs and workpieces, including the least favourable material combination. Check attachment strength using the agreed destructive test, weld consistency, alignment and reverse-face damage.

Gun and settings: check chuck grip, stud projection, gun lift and plunge where applicable, trigger operation and cable connections. Compare the delivered settings and accessories with the approved sample.

Power and protection: check supply compatibility, rating plate, earthing evidence, cable condition, cooling and thermal protection. On automatic cells, check the supplied guards, interlocks and emergency-stop operation.

Documents and arrival condition: match machine identification to the declaration and test reports. The electrical-equipment importer must ensure that instructions are in easily understandable English. Check gun protection, loose accessories, moisture damage and the agreed spare chucks and cables during inspection.

What goes wrong

A demonstration on clean, thick plate can hide poor results on coated or thin sheet. Incorrect stud tips, worn chucks, an unstable return connection or unsuitable gun settings can produce inconsistent attachment, excessive spatter or visible damage behind the weld. Agree acceptance samples and record both successful and failed trial settings.

A machine may weld acceptably at a relaxed pace but overheat during the intended production cycle. Repeat the trial at your working pace and with the ordered cables. Generic reports, missing English instructions and accessories that do not fit the supplied gun also cause avoidable problems; compare the complete delivered package with the approved specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stud welding machines from China?

The selected heading 8515 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data. Parts under 8515 90 80 90 also have a registration control; ask your customs broker to confirm its application.

Should I buy a capacitor-discharge or drawn-arc stud welder?

Choose through trials on your actual studs and base metal. Compare attachment strength, sheet damage, surface preparation, gun access and the production pace you need.

Does a stud welding machine need CE or UKCA marking?

Confirm the machinery safety rules and CE or UKCA marking requirements applicable to automatic welding cells with the relevant authority. Also confirm the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility rules applicable to mains welders. Ask for documents matching the delivered model.

What should I test before accepting a stud welder?

Trial your specified studs and workpieces, check attachment strength and reverse-face damage, then repeat at your production pace. Check gun settings, cables, cooling, English instructions and spare-part fit.
