Aramid staple fibre: 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 October 2026, aramid staple fibre under 5503 11 00 00 carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line.

Heading 5503 covers synthetic staple fibres not carded, combed or otherwise processed for spinning. The supplied facts contain only one aramid line, so the table contains only that line. Carded fibre, wadding and non-woven material need a separate classification check. Confirm the commodity code against the material and its processing stage.

For other fibres within this heading, see the wider staple fibre guide. Budget separately for import VAT using the UK duty and VAT guide.

Specify aramid type and processing behaviour

Specify whether you need para-aramid or meta-aramid, the intended spinning or non-woven process, cut length, linear density, crimp, colour and surface finish. Agree tolerances, tensile properties, elongation, moisture and acceptable contamination. State whether recycled material or blends are acceptable, and retain an approved sample.

Ask for batch test results and run a trial on your own equipment before approving bulk supply. Identify any finish or treatment in the specification. HSE says businesses importing a substance they have not imported before need to consider whether it requires UK REACH registration; establish the position for the supplied material before ordering.

For handling, obtain information about fibre dust and any treatment chemicals. Where substances are hazardous to health, employers must plan, manage and monitor their use under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 kg of aramid staple fibre under 5503 11 00 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,200, so it is £840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check the aramid type, declared blend and batch identity against the approved sample and supplier records.

Dimensions: sample across bales and check cut-length distribution, linear density, crimp and clumps against the agreed specification.

Performance: compare batch strength and elongation results with the purchase specification, then check opening and carding behaviour in a processing trial.

Packing: check bale seals, net weight, moisture, foreign fibres and traceable batch labels. Record findings using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A description such as heat-resistant aramid is too vague for an order. The wrong aramid type, an undeclared blend or a changed finish can make a shipment unsuitable for your process. Uneven cut length, clumps and foreign fibres can cause processing problems even when a batch certificate looks acceptable.

Do not accept a generic fibre report as proof of your finished product's performance. Agree tests for the intended application and keep samples linked to each batch. Compare arrival samples with the approved material before releasing the bales into production.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on aramid staple fibre from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty under 5503 11 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed.

Are para-aramid and meta-aramid interchangeable?

Specify the required type explicitly. Approve material against your application and processing trial rather than accepting an unspecified aramid substitute.

Does aramid staple fibre need UK REACH registration?

Check the supplied material's status rather than assuming. HSE says a business importing a new substance needs to consider whether UK REACH registration is required.

What should I check when aramid fibre arrives?

Check batch identity, cut length, linear density, strength records, contamination, moisture and net weight. Compare samples with the approved material and trial it before production.
