Duty on aquarium peat filter pellets

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 2703 covers peat, including peat litter, whether or not agglomerated. This guide concerns peat pellets sold for aquarium filtration. The supplied tariff data contain only the commodity line shown in the table.

Goods from China under 2703 00 00 00 carry 0% duty. The supplied data list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Defra guidance nevertheless distinguishes unused peat alone from prohibited artificial growing media containing organic matter. Obtain the complete composition and ask APHA to confirm the position if other materials are present.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual composition, processing and intended use, especially where binders or other filter materials are added. For other peat products, see the peat sourcing guide.

Specify peat composition and aquarium performance

Specify pure, unused peat and obtain a written declaration of all binders, additives and treatments. Ask how the peat is dried, formed and protected from contamination. Agree pellet dimensions, moisture, loose fines, packed weight and packaging. Approve a production sample rather than relying on photographs of the pellets.

Agree a water-test method recording starting acidity, carbonate hardness, pellet loading, water volume, contact time and temperature. Compare acidity change, colour release, cloudiness, swelling and breakdown with the approved sample. Test without livestock before evaluating suitability for the intended aquarium application.

Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. As a buying specification, require clear aquarium-use instructions, handling advice and batch identification. Have the supplier substantiate dosing and replacement claims using the agreed water conditions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 kilograms of aquarium peat filter pellets in sealed bags under 2703 00 00 00, invoiced at £1,800 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,600, so it is £520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Composition: match the batch declaration to the approved peat and investigate undeclared binders, fertilisers or other additions.

Pellets: check size consistency, loose dust, moisture, foreign material and breakdown after soaking.

Water response: compare acidity, colour and cloudiness with the approved sample under identical test conditions; check whether particles escape the intended filter bag.

Packing: inspect seals, damp damage, mould, declared weight, batch references and instruction artwork on arrival. Set the sampling plan through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking pellet can behave differently when the peat source, binder or processing changes. Excess fines can cloud the test water or escape the filter bag; weak pellets can collapse during soaking. Agree acceptance criteria for these behaviours and require approval before composition changes.

An acidity claim without the starting water conditions is difficult to assess. Repeat comparative tests on shipment samples and retain a sealed reference sample. If composition evidence is missing, resolve the plant-health position with APHA before shipment rather than treating the tariff entry as complete import clearance.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on aquarium peat pellets from China?

The supplied tariff data show 0% duty under 2703 00 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Can aquarium peat filter pellets be imported from China?

Defra guidance excepts material composed entirely of unused peat from the prohibition on artificial organic growing media. Ask APHA about pellets containing other ingredients before ordering.

How do I compare aquarium peat pellet samples?

Use the same starting water, pellet loading and contact conditions. Compare acidity change, colour, cloudiness, swelling and pellet breakdown against the approved sample.

Can I accept a supplier's universal dosing instructions?

Ask for supporting tests stating the starting water conditions and intended application. Check the instructions against your own comparative tests before approving the packaging.
