Sourcing aluminium LED strip profiles from China
Aluminium LED strip profiles from China carry 6% ordinary UK duty across the listed profile lines, with extrusion anti-dumping duty potentially adding up to 35.1%. Confirm the producer and applicable measure before ordering, and approve the channel with its matching diffuser. Cambridge China Bridge sources aluminium LED strip profiles.

Duty on aluminium lighting profiles
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7604 covers aluminium bars, rods and profiles. This guide concerns aluminium channels supplied without fitted lighting. Use the alloy composition and cross-section to distinguish hollow profiles from other profiles. An open channel does not become a hollow aluminium profile merely because a plastic diffuser clips over it. See the wider aluminium extrusions guide.
The supplied tariff extract records 6% ordinary duty throughout and no attached import controls. Its anti-dumping fields are blank, which does not establish exemption: the published extrusion guide identifies additional duty of up to 35.1%, or 15.4% for non-sampled cooperating exporters, subject to the required invoice declaration. The hollow-profile suspension is restricted to specified board-frame products and their stated use; do not assume an LED channel qualifies.
Confirm the goods as shipped, producer and invoice declaration with your customs broker using finding your commodity code. Do not treat the illustrative calculation as including anti-dumping duty; see import duty and VAT. Confirm with HMRC whether these profile lines fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations would apply. Ask the factory for emissions data and consult the UK carbon border adjustment guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other aluminium alloy profiles, including open lighting channels | 7604 29 90 90 | 6% | See the tariff |
| Aluminium alloy profiles with a hollow cross-section | 7604 21 00 00 | 6% | See the tariff |
| Unassembled non-alloy aluminium profiles containing not more than 99.3% aluminium | 7604 10 90 80 | 6% | See the tariff |
| Other non-alloy aluminium profiles | 7604 10 90 89 | 6% | See the tariff |
Specify the channel and matching diffuser
Provide the cross-section drawing, alloy and temper, wall thickness, cut length and tolerances. State whether the channel is surface-mounted, recessed or intended for a corner. Mark the usable internal width for the strip, diffuser groove, mounting clip engagement, cable exit and end-cap fit. Specify anodising or coating by colour and thickness, with an approved finish sample.
Approve the channel, diffuser, clips and end caps together. Specify the diffuser material, clear or opal appearance, and acceptable light distribution using your intended strip. Test the assembled sample under the intended operating conditions before making heat-management claims. If ordering fitted strips or drivers, arrange a separate assessment of the finished assembly through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of carton-packed, cut-to-length aluminium alloy lighting channels under 7604 29 90 90, invoiced at £9,702 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,902. Duty at 6% is £714.12. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,616.12, so it is £2,523.22. Import taxes total £3,237.34; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £714.12 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure groove width, internal clearance, wall thickness and cut length against the drawing; check straightness and twist on unpacked lengths.
Fit: install the intended strip and fit diffusers, clips and end caps sampled across cartons; check retention, gaps and removal without cracking.
Finish and edges: compare colour with the approved sample, measure the agreed coating thickness, and check scratches, cut-end burrs and cable exits.
Packing: check separators, end protection, carton identification and accessory counts; inspect arrival stock for bent channels and cracked covers. Define acceptance checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
The channel sample fits, but production diffusers come from a different tool and either fall out or require excessive force. Thin walls, twisted lengths, mismatched end caps and damaged grooves create installation problems. Keep an approved assembled sample and compare production components together, rather than accepting separate samples.
A profile quotation can omit extrusion anti-dumping duty, while long cartons can arrive bent despite intact outer packaging. Confirm the producer and invoice declaration before shipment and photograph unpacked defects by batch. Consumer-use profiles must not be sold if your business knows, or should have known, they are unsafe; assess burrs, exposed edges and insecure covers before release.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on aluminium LED strip profiles from China?
The supplied tariff extract records 6% ordinary duty for the listed profiles. Extrusion anti-dumping duty may apply additionally, up to 35.1%; check the producer and invoice declaration before ordering.
Which commodity code covers an aluminium LED channel?
An open alloy profile is a candidate for 7604 29 90 90; an alloy profile with a hollow cross-section is a candidate for 7604 21 00 00. Confirm classification from the drawing and goods as shipped.
Can I use the hollow-profile duty suspension?
Do not assume so. The supplied suspension concerns specified hollow profiles for board frames and display cases, with material, dimensions, finish and use conditions. An LED channel needs its own eligibility check.
What should I test before accepting the profiles?
Check the intended strip fits, the diffuser stays retained, clips and end caps match, and cut ends are deburred. Inspect full lengths for bending and twist, and compare the finish with the approved sample.
