Zero duty on aircraft tail assemblies

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, the relevant heading 8807 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no listed suspensions. Tailplanes, fins, rudders and elevators fall within the aircraft-parts family. The table also includes associated helicopter tail-shaft connectors and tail rotors; these descriptions are alternatives to check against the actual goods.

The tariff attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to the aircraft airframe-parts lines and a restriction on entry into free circulation to 8807 30 00 99 concerning ozone-depleting substances. Equipment placed on the Great Britain market must comply with applicable fluorinated gas product bans. Importing ozone-depleting substances into Great Britain requires a licence. Ask your broker to confirm the applicable declaration, exemption and any gas-related requirements for the actual assembly.

The tariff also lists a cultural-object export licence control. Great Britain has no cultural-object import licensing requirement; confirm the listed export control with your broker for historic parts. The tail-shaft connector line lists a supplementary import unit; confirm the reporting unit. Match the drawing and intended use to the commodity code. The wing assemblies guide covers the wider aircraft airframe-parts context.

Specify the tail structure and release documents

State whether you are buying a fixed tailplane, vertical fin, rudder, elevator or complete empennage. Name the airframe, part number, drawing revision, mounting interfaces and supplied hardware. Specify alloy or composite construction, laminate schedule where relevant, surface treatment, mass, balance criteria and permitted repairs. Identify whether hinges, bearings, fairings and control attachments are included.

For certified civil aircraft, confirm with the relevant aviation authority whether the parts need an authorised release certificate from an approved production or maintenance organisation before fitting. Confirm acceptable release paperwork with the receiving aviation organisation before ordering. Keep any required certificate with the part and match its identity to the delivered assembly.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial batch of model-aircraft tail assemblies under 8807 30 00 99, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,800, so it is £3,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match part numbers, serial markings, drawing revisions and release paperwork to the purchase order. Check material and manufacturing records against the delivered batch.

Interfaces: measure mounting holes, hinge alignment, bearing seats and control attachment positions against the drawing. Use an agreed fixture to check fit without forcing or modifying the part.

Structure: inspect skins, bonded joints, fasteners and edge sealing for dents, cracks, corrosion or separation. Review the specified structural inspection reports rather than accepting appearance alone.

Movement and packing: check control-surface travel, clearance, mass and balance against the agreed specification. Inspect arrival packaging and supports for crushed edges or distorted surfaces. Agree the scope using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A tail assembly can resemble the sample yet have displaced hinge axes, mismatched mounting holes or a different internal lay-up. Coating can obscure repairs, while poor supports allow thin skins and trailing edges to deform in transit. Agree measurable acceptance criteria and retain the approved drawing with the inspection record.

Confirm with the relevant aviation authority what authorised release paperwork is required and whether a factory inspection report is sufficient. Quarantine assemblies with missing or mismatched documents, unexplained repairs or transport damage. Resolve the discrepancy with the supplier and receiving aviation organisation before fitting.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on aircraft tail assemblies from China?

The relevant heading 8807 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties in the supplied tariff snapshot.

Can I fit a Chinese tail assembly to a certified aircraft?

Confirm with the relevant aviation authority whether an authorised release certificate from an approved production or maintenance organisation is required before fitting. Confirm acceptable paperwork with the receiving aviation organisation before buying.

Are tailplanes and helicopter tail rotors under the same code?

They have different tariff descriptions. Tail airframe assemblies use aircraft-parts lines; tail rotors use rotor lines, and specified tail-shaft connectors have a separate line. Classify the actual item.

What should I inspect when a tail assembly arrives?

Check identity and documents, mounting and hinge geometry, structural condition, control-surface clearance, mass and balance against the drawing. Record packing damage before releasing the assembly from receiving inspection.
