Duty and organic import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2102 covers active and inactive yeasts, other dead single-cell micro-organisms and prepared baking powders. For active dried distillers' yeast, compare other active yeast with culture yeast using the supplier's product description. The selected active-yeast lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspension.

The tariff attaches an import control of organic products. Organic yeast imported from China into Great Britain needs a valid certificate of inspection. The exporter’s control body issues the certificate in the country of export. Confirm the shipment paperwork with your customs broker before dispatch.

Confirm the commodity code from the yeast's identity, active condition and intended use. The table includes feeding lines for comparison; they are not the lines for yeast bought to ferment a distillery wash. For the wider yeast context, see active dried brewers' yeast.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026.

Specify the strain and fermentation conditions

Specify active dried yeast for distilling, the strain identity, your wash ingredients, fermentation temperature, alcohol tolerance and desired flavour profile. Ask whether the pack contains yeast alone or a blend with nutrients or other ingredients. Agree rehydration instructions, storage conditions, moisture specification and remaining shelf life on arrival.

Ask for a certificate of analysis tied to the production lot. Trial a sample in your own wash and record fermentation progress, residual sugar and the resulting spirit's flavour against an approved sample. Agree the test method and acceptance criteria before ordering, rather than relying on a generic claim of high activity.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a pallet of active dried distillers' yeast in sealed trade packs under 2102 10 90 90, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,500, so it is £700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the strain, composition and lot code on the packs, certificate of analysis and order.

Performance: check fermentation activity, moisture and microbiological results against the agreed specification; retain a sample from the delivered lot.

Packaging: inspect seals, vacuum where specified, moisture damage and clumping; compare transport conditions with the supplier's storage instructions.

Labels: check dates and net quantity. For retail food packs sold in Great Britain, confirm applicable requirements for the product name, ingredients and food-business address with the relevant food authority. Check organic shipment paperwork separately.

What goes wrong

A supplier sends a different strain, or the sample performs well while the delivered lot ferments slowly. Heat, leaking seals and moisture can reduce activity before arrival. A nutrient blend described simply as yeast can also leave the buyer without a clear composition to assess.

Approve the actual formulation, compare delivered-lot performance with the approved sample and record damaged packs before releasing stock. A visually sound pack does not prove fermentation performance. Use an agreed sampling plan with your quality inspection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on active dried distillers' yeast from China?

The relevant active-yeast lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm whether the supplied product is other active yeast or culture yeast.

Which commodity code should I use for distillers' yeast?

Compare 2102 10 90 90 for other non-feed active yeast with 2102 10 10 90 for non-feed culture yeast. Give your broker the strain, composition, product description and intended use before choosing.

Does organic distillers' yeast need import paperwork?

Yes. Organic yeast from China entering Great Britain needs a valid certificate of inspection, issued by the exporter’s control body. Confirm the shipment paperwork with your broker before dispatch.

How do I check whether imported dried yeast still works?

Trial the delivered lot in your wash using the agreed method. Compare fermentation progress and residual sugar with the approved sample, and check moisture, pack seals and storage history.
