Zero duty and organic import controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2102 covers active and inactive yeasts, other dead single-cell micro-organisms and prepared baking powders. The supplied lines for Chinese goods all carry 0% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions. For sake yeast, distinguish culture yeast from other active yeast using the product description and intended use.

The tariff attaches import control of organic products. For organic yeast imported from China into Great Britain, obtain a Great Britain certificate of inspection for each consignment, including samples, and check the exporter's control body and country against the non-UK organic registers. The importing company must be based and certified in the UK. Confirm the organic arrangements before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code from strain documentation, whether the yeast remains active, its composition and its brewing use. Drying alone does not establish that sake yeast belongs under dried baker's yeast. The table includes baker's and inactive yeast as classification comparisons, rather than sake-yeast substitutes. See the wider yeast and baking powder guide for the rest of the heading.

Specify the sake strain and fermentation trial

Ask for the strain identity, producer and batch certificate of analysis. Specify active dried yeast for sake fermentation, and request a full composition statement identifying carriers or other ingredients. Establish whether the offer is yeast alone or a mixed fermentation starter.

Agree rehydration instructions, storage conditions, moisture and viable-cell acceptance criteria, and remaining shelf life on arrival. Trial the sample in your own rice mash and brewing process. Record fermentation start, progress, completion and aroma against an approved sample, using the same preparation and temperature conditions for subsequent batch comparisons.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial order: 10 kg of active dried sake yeast, assuming classification is confirmed under 2102 10 90 90, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,100, so it is £420. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match strain, batch reference and composition to the approved sample and certificate of analysis.

Activity: test a retained batch sample after rehydration in your brewing process; check viability, moisture and agreed microbiological results.

Packaging: inspect seals, moisture damage, caking and date codes; compare transit conditions with the agreed storage specification.

Labels and records: for retail packs sold in Great Britain, check the name, ingredients, net quantity, date mark and UK food-business address. Food businesses must retain supplier and business-customer records; connect these to the yeast batch.

What goes wrong

A supplier substitutes general brewing yeast for the approved sake strain, or sends a mixed starter described simply as yeast. A lot can look dry and intact yet ferment differently from the sample. Leaking seals, moisture and heat during transport can also reduce activity. Check identity and run a batch fermentation trial before committing the lot to production.

Batch paperwork that does not match the delivered packs makes investigation harder. Keep a retained sample and photograph the batch marks before repacking. Unsafe food must not be placed on the market. Treat activity testing and microbiological testing as separate checks, and hold questionable stock while investigating.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on active dried sake yeast from China?

The supplied tariff lines carry 0% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm whether your sake yeast is culture yeast or other active yeast before declaring it.

Is sake yeast classified as dried baker's yeast?

Do not choose that line merely because the yeast is dried. Give your customs broker the strain identity, composition, active status and sake-brewing use to confirm the classification.

How do I check that imported sake yeast still works?

Rehydrate a batch sample according to the agreed instructions and trial it in your rice mash. Compare fermentation progress and aroma with the approved sample, alongside viability and moisture results.

What paperwork does organic sake yeast need?

For China-to-Great Britain imports, each organic consignment needs a Great Britain certificate of inspection. Check the exporter's control body and country on the organic registers; the importer must be UK-based and certified.
