Sourcing sanding sponges from China
Abrasive sanding sponges from China under heading 6805 carry 0% UK duty across the backing categories. Consumer products sold in Great Britain must be safe. Specify the foam, grit and coating, and confirm the code from the actual construction. Cambridge China Bridge sources abrasive sanding sponges.

UK duty and backing classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6805 covers abrasive powder or grain on textile, paper, paperboard or other bases. For abrasive coated directly onto foam, check the other-materials line, 6805 30 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.
All listed backing categories carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm their relevance with your customs broker, particularly for used or discarded goods. For imports into England under waste notification controls, the Chinese exporter must apply to the dispatch-country competent authority for consent.
Give your broker the backing composition, coating details and a sample to confirm the commodity code. A sponge carrying a separate abrasive sheet needs its construction checked. See the wider sandpaper and sanding discs guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abrasive-coated foam sanding blocks | 6805 30 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify foam firmness and abrasive coverage
Specify the abrasive mineral, grit designation and grading scale, foam composition, firmness, thickness, shape and coated faces. State whether the sponge is for flat surfaces, corners or curved profiles, and whether it will be used dry or wet. Agree a reference sample and the surfaces on which you will compare scratch pattern and cutting performance.
Ask for samples from the intended production construction. Check whether the foam returns to shape after compression and whether the coating stays attached during bending and rinsing. Consumer packs in Great Britain fall under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005; products supplied there must be safe.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 25,000 abrasive-coated foam sanding blocks, illustrative only under 6805 30 00 00, invoiced at £25,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £26,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,500, so it is £5,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Grit and cut: compare sampled sponges with the approved reference on the intended wood, filler or painted surface; check scratch depth and grain shedding.
Foam and shape: check dimensions, firmness, compression recovery and access to the intended corners or profiles.
Coating and wet use: bend the sponge, inspect edges for bare patches and test rinsing and reuse where wet sanding is specified.
Packing and identification: check grit markings, product identification, agreed instructions and pack contents against the order. Use the quality inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong
Foam that is too soft rounds edges; foam that is too firm does not follow curves. Uneven coating leaves bare areas, loose grains scratch the workpiece, and a changed grit produces a different finish. Compare production samples with the retained reference rather than accepting colour as proof of grit.
A sponge described as washable may lose grain or split after rinsing. Compressed packing can leave blocks distorted on arrival. Agree the wet-use test and packing method before ordering, then repeat the relevant checks on delivered stock.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on sanding sponges from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty across heading 6805, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the backing-based code for your sponge.
Which commodity code covers foam sanding blocks?
For abrasive coated directly onto foam, check 6805 30 00 00, the other-materials line. Confirm the complete construction with your customs broker.
Can sanding sponges be used wet?
Specify wet use expressly. Test coating adhesion, grain shedding and foam recovery after rinsing; a sponge that works dry may fail when soaked.
How do I check sanding sponge grit?
Ask which grading scale the factory uses and compare the scratch pattern and cutting performance with an approved sample on the intended surface.
