Can I clear a courier shipment myself?

Yes, you can make your own customs declaration, but arrange the handover with the courier before dispatch. Ordinary stock clearance uses customs declaration software, so compare setup and handling costs with the fee you hope to avoid. Discuss the supplier paperwork with Cambridge China Bridge.

Agree the courier handover before dispatch

Ask the courier’s UK clearance team whether the booked service supports importer self-clearance or an outside customs broker. Obtain written instructions before the factory hands over the goods. Ask how to flag the booking so the courier does not submit its own import declaration while you prepare yours.

Confirm the arrival location, shipment and inventory references, contact responsible for the handover, and evidence needed to resume delivery after clearance. Ask which handling, transfer, storage or advancement charges would remain. If the supplier books transport, have it obtain the same confirmation against the actual booking. Do not budget a saving until the courier explains the remaining charges. For sample shipments, see booking your own courier.

Choose the declaration route for courier stock

For an ordinary China-to-Great-Britain stock shipment, plan for a full import declaration through the Customs Declaration Service unless an applicable simplification has been confirmed. The merchandise in baggage online service is for accompanied commercial goods or small vehicles; it is not the appropriate shortcut for courier-carried stock. This guide concerns Great Britain, so obtain destination-specific advice for Northern Ireland.

For a low-value parcel, ask the courier which declaration route it proposes and whether a reduced-data process is relevant. Ask it to explain eligibility and who would submit the entry before assuming you can use its route yourself. Our UK customs clearance guide covers the general process and taxes.

Set up registration and submission software

You need a subscription to the Customs Declaration Service. Confirm with HMRC which importer EORI number and sign-in details you should use when arranging access. A subscription alone does not replace the specialist software needed to submit declarations to HMRC.

Before buying software, ask the provider whether it supports imports through the courier’s actual arrival facility. Ask the courier and provider whether an inventory connection or customs badge is needed for that handover, who supplies it and what it costs. Arrange a practice submission and confirm how you will receive errors and clearance messages before dispatch.

Prepare the entry and complete the release handover

Prepare the classification, customs value, procedure, transport costs and supporting documents before attempting the entry. Use our customs documents checklist rather than relying on the parcel label. Agree how duty and import VAT will be paid or accounted for, and avoid instructing the courier to advance tax while separately arranging payment yourself.

Submitting an entry is only part of the job. Duty must be paid before release where payable. Monitor the declaration for queries and clearance, then send the courier the agreed reference and release evidence. Ask it to confirm that the cleared entry matches the held parcel and that delivery can proceed. Keep the declaration and supporting records together. For partial clearance, see our temporary storage shipment part-clearance guide.

Compare the whole job with using an agent

Compare the courier’s clearance fee with software access, any inventory connection, remaining carrier charges and your staff time. Include learning the declaration fields, resolving rejected entries, answering document queries and arranging release. Self-clearance is easier to justify when you already have the systems and skills, or expect enough repeat work to use them.

Also ask an independent broker for a quote accepted by the courier. Check whether it covers document review, submission, queries and the release handover. Use our customs agent appointment guide for written authority. If clearance has already happened, follow our courier fee dispute guide. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can help reconcile factory documents before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I avoid the courier clearance fee by clearing myself?

Possibly. Obtain the courier’s written handover instructions and remaining charges before dispatch, then compare those costs and your own work with its clearance fee.

Can I use the simple online customs form for courier stock?

The merchandise in baggage service is for accompanied goods. Plan for a full import declaration using specialist software unless an applicable simplification has been confirmed.

Is an EORI number enough to clear goods myself?

No. You also need a Customs Declaration Service subscription and submission software. Confirm any facility-specific inventory access with the courier and software provider.

Should I self-clear if the parcel has already arrived?

First ask whether the courier has already submitted the entry. Obtain the parcel’s status, handover instructions and remaining charges before preparing another declaration.
