How to write retail pack disposal instructions
Specify the box, window, tray and film separately, using the actual assembled pack to confirm what consumers can detach. Give each component a supported disposal route and put collection conditions beside the relevant recycling claim. Agree the wording and printed proof with Cambridge China Bridge.

Define what the recycling claim covers
The CMA guidance says recycling claims must distinguish the whole product from its packaging or individual parts, and recycling instructions should be provided. For this pack, name the box, window, tray and film rather than approving a general ‘recyclable packaging’ statement.
Use recycled and recyclable claim evidence for the supporting claim file and factory packaging data for the material information. This guide turns that information into consumer separation instructions and an artwork brief.
Specify separation from the assembled sample
Ask the factory for an assembled pack and photographs showing each component, coating and attachment. Try removing the film, lifting out the tray and detaching the window by hand. Record what stays bonded to the box. Specify removal only where it is achievable and needed for the supported disposal route.
The CMA’s mixed-material example favours easily separable components with their disposal clearly marked on the packaging. Do not write ‘remove window’ merely because the drawing shows a separate window: test the glued production sample.
| Component | Separation check | Instruction to agree |
|---|---|---|
| Box | Check coatings, labels and any bonded window | State the route for the box as it remains after the specified separation |
| Window | Confirm whether it detaches cleanly | Say whether to remove it or leave it attached, then state the supported route |
| Tray | Check whether it lifts out and has bonded inserts | Name the tray and give its own preparation and disposal instructions |
| Film | Identify wrapping film and any tray-sealing film | Specify removal and the verified collection route, or the appropriate waste route |
Put collection conditions beside the claim
The CMA says qualifications must be clear and prominent, and important qualifying information must be sufficiently close to the claim for consumers to see it before deciding. Put any local-collection restriction or specialist collection condition beside the affected component’s recycling claim on the pack. Apply the same approach wherever that claim appears in online product copy.
As a drafting pattern, use ‘Tray: recycle where your local collection accepts this tray’ only after checking that this accurately describes the route. If film needs a separate collection point, say so beside the film instruction. Avoid a broad recycling headline whose limitation appears only on another panel, inside the box or behind a scan code.
Approve wording against the finished pack
Send the factory a component schedule containing the material description, attachment method, separation action, disposal wording and evidence behind the proposed route. Where acceptance is unresolved, hold the recycling claim for that component. Do not treat a material name or supplier reassurance as confirmation of collection.
Use factory artwork approval to control the printed version. Check the proof at its intended print size, including component names, arrows and nearby collection conditions. Ask Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China to compare the assembled production sample with the approved instructions and flag changes to film, glue, coatings or tray material.
Frequently asked questions
Should buyers tell customers to remove a box window?
Only where the assembled sample confirms it can be removed and the supported disposal route calls for removal. If it stays bonded, assess the box with the window attached and write instructions for that construction.
Can the tray and film share a recycling instruction?
Give them separate instructions unless evidence supports the same preparation and collection route. Identify wrapping film separately from any film sealing the tray.
Where should ‘check local collection’ appear?
Beside the affected component’s recycling claim, clearly visible before purchase. Repeat the condition wherever the claim appears online. Make the condition specific enough to guide disposal.
Can a scan code carry all the recycling caveats?
Keep important collection qualifications close to the claim. A scan code can support further detail, but should not hide a condition that changes how consumers understand the recycling claim.
