Can I reject a whole set if one item is faulty?
Possibly, if a right to reject applies and the goods form a commercial unit: separating them would materially impair their value or the set’s character. Consumer and business purchases need different checks. Gather the order and matching evidence before requesting a remedy. Discuss China-side records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check whether this was a consumer or business purchase
Start with the contracting UK seller, the buyer’s identity and the purchase purpose. Consumer protection here concerns an individual buying wholly or mainly outside their trade, business, craft or profession. Furniture for business premises and gift sets bought for resale should be assessed as business purchases rather than assumed to carry consumer remedies.
For a business order, review the UK seller’s supply terms with an adviser before accepting part of the delivery or agreeing a settlement. The Sale of Goods Act says that accepting goods within a commercial unit counts as accepting the whole unit. Establishing a commercial unit does not itself establish a right to reject.
Establish exactly what was sold together
For consumer rejection, a commercial unit means goods whose division would materially impair their value or the unit’s character. Where the right to reject applies, a consumer cannot reject part of that unit while keeping the rest. Identify the claimed unit precisely, rather than simply calling the entire order a set.
Save the listing, accepted quote, order confirmation, invoice, packaging description and messages promising a matching suite or complete gift presentation. Map each item to those records. Record shared product references, finishes, presentation packaging and whether pieces were offered separately. Treat a shared invoice or bundle discount as evidence to investigate, rather than a complete explanation.
Show why separating the items matters
Photograph the fault close up and the complete group together. Explain the consequence of removing the faulty item: an incomplete gift presentation, a missing matching chair or a broken visual sequence across furniture. Support any claim about reduced resale value with actual buyer feedback or comparable offers, rather than an invented estimate.
Ask whether a replacement is available in the agreed fabric, finish, pattern and dimensions. Save any reply saying the range is discontinued or the proposed replacement differs. Compare replacement evidence beside the retained goods under consistent lighting. Our veneer and grain matching guide covers the detailed appearance checks.
Choose the remedy before arranging a return
For a consumer purchase, check promptly whether the short-term right to reject remains available. It can be lost when its time limit passes unless the seller agrees an extension. Keep delivery, installation, complaint and repair correspondence together; our repair and rejection deadline guide addresses that timing issue.
If rejection is available, state whether you reject the complete commercial unit and identify every included item. If that route is disputed or unavailable, ask an adviser which remedy applies, and ask the seller to propose a repair, matching replacement or agreed price reduction. For a business purchase, have the adviser assess the contract and acceptance history before asserting whole-set rejection.

Send a request the seller can assess
Write: “The attached order describes these goods as a matching set. The photographs show the fault in the identified item. Separating it would affect the set in the following ways, supported by the attached records. I request rejection of the complete identified unit and a refund. Please confirm your position, any alternative remedy and the collection arrangements.” Adapt the request to the remedy available in your case.
Ask for a written explanation if the seller treats the goods as independently returnable. Confirm which pieces will be collected, packing arrangements and proposed costs before dispatch. Use our discounted partial-return guide if you agree to keep some goods. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can help gather factory matching and replacement records; agree the scope of that assistance.
Frequently asked questions
Does a bundle discount prove I bought a set?
Use it alongside the listing, order and matching promises. Explain what separating the goods would change about their value or the set’s character.
Can I return only the faulty chair?
If consumer rejection applies and the chair belongs to a commercial unit, you cannot reject it while keeping the rest of that unit. Identify the unit before arranging collection.
What if the replacement does not match?
Compare it with the agreed specification and retained goods. Photograph the difference and ask for a written proposal addressing the complete matching group.
Can my business reject the whole gift set?
Do not assume consumer remedies apply. Ask an adviser to assess the supply terms, defect and acceptance history. Accepting goods within a commercial unit can count as accepting the whole unit.
