How to prepare for Intertextile Shanghai
Choose the edition that fits your development calendar and confirmed supplier attendance. Search by fabric construction and garment use, then send a buying brief before booking mill and accessory meetings. Record sample references and agree follow-up actions. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate this preparation with its staff in China.

Choose the edition around your buying calendar
Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics has spring and autumn editions. Choose around your collection’s fabric approval and ordering deadlines, allowing time for sample evaluation and revisions. Ask shortlisted suppliers which edition they will attend and what they can show; the edition name alone does not establish whether their collection suits your range.
Before booking travel, check the organiser’s page for your chosen edition, including dates, venue and visitor registration arrangements. Check which edition the exhibitor directory covers before treating a listing as confirmed attendance. Keep provisional suppliers separate from those who have confirmed their stand and meeting contact.
Search by material, construction and garment use
Use the organiser’s Exhibitors & Products search to build separate shortlists for main fabrics, linings and accessories. Start with fibre or construction, then narrow by garment use and required finish. Search descriptions using terms such as woven polyester, knitted cotton, denim or stretch lining; a broad search for clothing fabric gives little basis for comparison.
Treat directory categories and business descriptions as leads to check. Ask whether the exhibitor operates the mill, converts bought-in fabric or trades finished stock, and where weaving or knitting, dyeing and finishing take place. For the detailed material brief, use our polyester and nylon fabric guide or coated fabric guide.
Send a buying brief before booking appointments
Send each shortlisted supplier your garment use, reference swatch or image, fibre composition, construction, target weight, usable width, colour and finish. State expected order quantities by colour, your delivery destination and the date you need fabric available for cutting. Ask them to identify suitable article references before confirming a meeting.
Book directly with the supplier and confirm the edition, hall, stand, local meeting time, named contact and working language. Request relevant swatch books, sample cuts and someone who can answer production questions. Group appointments by hall, leave room for overruns, and agree an alternative contact method if the stand is busy.
Plan accessory meetings alongside mill meetings
Build an accessory list from the garment design: zips, buttons, thread, elastic, labels, lining and interlining as relevant. Search these separately rather than assuming the fabric mill supplies them. Our garment trims guide covers the product checks to carry into these conversations.
Bring fabric references to accessory appointments. Discuss shade matching, attachment method, washing behaviour and compatibility with the intended garment. Ask each supplier about stock versus custom production, minimum quantities by colour or design, sampling charges and repeat availability. Confirm who will send matching samples to the garment maker.

Leave with traceable samples and agreed actions
Label each sample with the supplier, article reference, colour, finish and meeting notes. Record whether it represents stock, a development proposal or a grade available for bulk production. Request a written quotation tied to that reference, with quantity conditions, delivery terms, sample arrangements and the proposed production schedule.
After the fair, compare suppliers against the same brief and resolve gaps before approving material. Use our textile wash-performance guide to plan evaluation. Agree who requests lab dips, follows up missing evidence and checks production capability. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can coordinate supplier follow-up and sample collection.
