Flying with a China-bought powered wheelchair
Before buying, obtain the exact battery identity and ratings, illustrated isolation instructions, ready-to-load dimensions and weight, and handling details. Send the pack to each operating airline and ask for written acceptance for your itinerary. Factory evidence can be checked in China by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the battery actually supplied
Ask for the wheelchair model and configuration, battery manufacturer and model, chemistry, installed battery quantity and clear photographs of every battery label. Obtain rated voltage, amp-hour capacity, watt-hour rating, battery dimensions and weight. Record whether batteries are removable by design and identify any spares you intend to carry. A description such as 'lithium battery' leaves too much unresolved.
Ask your intended airline which battery documents it needs, then obtain matching factory evidence, including an SDS or test documentation where requested. Reconcile the labels, manual and reports before paying. Our test report verification guide explains how to check report identity and model coverage.
Obtain illustrated isolation instructions
Request an English instruction sheet for the exact chair showing how to switch it off, prevent accidental activation and isolate its electrical circuits using the manufacturer's method. Ask for labelled photographs and a demonstration video. Have the factory distinguish electrical isolation, battery removal and manual freewheel mode, and explain how to restore normal operation.
Send these instructions to the airline for review. Ask whether batteries stay fitted or need removal, who will perform any agreed procedure, and how removed batteries and terminals should be protected. Government ground-handler guidance says not to tamper with batteries or unplug cables. Resolve any conflict between factory instructions and the proposed handling procedure before buying.
Measure the ready-to-load chair
Obtain measured length, width, height and weight in its normal configuration and its smallest manufacturer-approved loading configuration. Identify which batteries and accessories each weight includes. Ask for photographs showing the measurements, folding sequence and removed parts. Carton dimensions and shipping weight do not describe the chair the airline will handle.
Send the loading dimensions and orientation to the airline and ask whether they suit the planned aircraft's loading access and hold arrangements. Ask whether it can remain upright and what happens if the aircraft changes. Do not accept 'foldable' as evidence that the chair will fit. Keep wider product checks in our wheelchair sourcing guide.
Agree handling and passenger assistance
Ask the factory to mark lifting and securing points on photographs and explain freewheel operation, brake re-engagement and protection of the joystick. Identify removable cushions, headrests and other fragile accessories, with instructions for packing and refitting them. Government guidance says not to attach tie-downs to footplates or backrest bars.
Agree where you hand over the chair, assistance with transferring to an airport chair or aircraft seat, and where it will be returned at connections and arrival. Ask who will refit removed parts and restore operation. Attach the agreed handling sheet to the chair, keep a copy with you and photograph its condition before handover.

Get written acceptance before committing
GOV.UK advises checking with your airline first for battery-powered wheelchairs. Before committing to the purchase, send the complete pack to each operating airline, including connecting and return flights. Request written acceptance identifying the chair, battery configuration, spares, itinerary and handling conditions. Ask what forms remain outstanding. Treat the seller's 'airline approved' claim as a prompt to seek confirmation.
Put the accepted configuration and instruction revision in the order, with battery substitutions subject to your written approval. Compare the finished chair with that record before dispatch. Government advice is to tell the airline promptly about changes before the flight; request renewed acceptance if relevant details change. Arrange the factory shipment separately using our lithium battery shipping guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly with a powered wheelchair bought from China?
Check with each operating airline using the exact chair and battery details. Obtain written acceptance covering your itinerary, loading configuration and handling arrangements before committing to the purchase.
What battery information should I ask the factory for?
Ask for chemistry, manufacturer, model, label photographs, voltage, amp-hour capacity, watt-hour rating, quantity, dimensions, weight and removability. Include planned spares and documents requested by the airline.
Do I need to remove my wheelchair battery to fly?
Ask the airline to confirm the arrangement for your exact battery and chair. Supply the manufacturer's isolation and removal instructions, and agree who will carry out any required procedure.
Is a folding wheelchair automatically accepted by airlines?
Obtain measured ready-to-load dimensions and weight, then ask the airline to confirm suitability for the planned aircraft. Folding alone does not establish that the loading and handling arrangements are suitable.
