Can I buy animal-based fishing bait from China?
Possibly, but do not dispatch until APHA confirms the route for the exact bait and your personal angling use. Obtain its animal species, ingredients and treatment details, then resolve documents, border handling, permitted use and disposal. Factory information can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify every animal ingredient and its treatment
Request the complete formula, including ingredients within flavourings and binders. Ask for each animal ingredient's species and origin, the manufacturer's details and photographs of the actual packaging. Distinguish whole fish, shellfish, worms, insect larvae and processed mixtures. Flag milk, egg, meat and gelatine ingredients separately for the authority's assessment.
Establish whether the bait is live, raw, frozen, dried or otherwise processed. Request the treatment method, process records, storage conditions and evidence supporting pathogen-control claims. Ask what any drying treatment achieves against salmonella and other pathogens. Treat descriptions such as sterilised, natural or shelf-stable as questions to investigate before buying.
Get confirmation for the exact personal-use shipment
Send APHA the ingredient and treatment pack, quantity, manufacturer, dispatch country, delivery address and intended fishery. Explain that this is a purchase for your own angling, whether it will arrive by post, courier or accompanied luggage, and whether any bait is alive. State explicitly whether delivery is to England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Ask whether the proposed bait qualifies for the fishing-bait import route, whether China is eligible for these ingredients and whether any current safeguards affect it. Ask which country and establishment checks apply and whether your personal-use circumstances change the procedure. Request a written answer covering the actual shipment. Our import restrictions guide covers the wider checking method.
Resolve the commercial document and health certificate
For bait covered by the official fishing-bait guidance, an exporter-issued commercial document must accompany the consignment. Ask APHA and the proposed border control post whether a health certificate, authorisation or additional supporting evidence is also needed for your exact product and route. Have them identify the applicable document format before the factory prepares it.
Prepare a draft showing sender, recipient, manufacturing and destination premises, country of origin, ingredients, animal species, drying treatment and intended recreational use. Request confirmation of the package wording too. Match the final paperwork to the actual bait and packaging. Use our customs documents guide for the separate invoice, packing list and transport paperwork.
Agree border handling and the destination
The general animal-by-product import guidance requires entry through an approved border control post. Ask the proposed post to confirm that it can handle your bait. Agree with the clearance agent who will make any required advance notification, the submission deadline, document handover and arrangements for presenting the consignment.
Ask APHA whether delivery to your home is acceptable, or whether the proposed destination needs registration or approval. Obtain carrier acceptance for the exact contents and service, including frozen handling where proposed. Agree who manages a hold, refusal, return or disposal and the resulting charges. Keep dispatch on hold until the authority response, documents and booked route agree.

Confirm use and disposal before ordering
Check the applicable fishing byelaws and obtain the fishery's acceptance of the named bait, target fish and method. Our freshwater tackle guide explains the national, local and fishery checks. Ask APHA separately about storage, handling and any restrictions involving farmed fish. Keep the use confirmation alongside the import response.
Ask APHA how unused, spoiled or refused bait should be disposed of in your circumstances, and identify an accepted disposal service before paying. Do not plan to empty leftovers into the water, compost them or put them in household rubbish without resolving that question. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can gather ingredient information, treatment records and document drafts for these checks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import fishing bait from China for myself?
Possibly. Send APHA the ingredients, species, treatment, destination and shipment method. Obtain confirmation covering your own angling use before dispatch.
Is dried fishing bait automatically allowed?
Do not decide from the word dried. Obtain treatment records and ask APHA to assess the ingredients, pathogen-control evidence, origin and proposed import route.
Does fishing bait need a health certificate?
The fishing-bait guidance requires an exporter-issued commercial document. Ask APHA and the border control post whether your exact shipment also needs a health certificate or other evidence.
Can I throw unused imported bait in the lake?
Do not plan to discard leftovers in the water. Ask APHA for the disposal route for your bait and circumstances, and check the fishery's instructions before use.
